Popol and Kupa MLBB Guide: The Wolf Is Half the Hero (Season 42)

A 54.7% win rate — the highest of any marksman — on the duo everyone ignores. Popol and Kupa, honestly: a wolf with a tank's health bar, traps that see for you, and the 30 seconds that decide everything.

Why he's feared (and loved)

Gold lane, minute three. Their marksman and roamer step up together to bully a small boy with a spear — a fair 2v1, they think. Then the river bush stands up. It has teeth. Kupa hits their carry from the flank, the trap I buried behind them snaps shut and roots the roamer, and when they finally commit I press We Are Angry! and the wolf doubles in size mid-bite. They were never in a 2v1. They were fighting two health bars, one belonging to a wolf with a tank's HP pool and no fear.

That is Popol and Kupa, the Icefield Companions. Per Fandom's story, Popol fell into the same beast trap as a starving frost wolf — he freed Kupa instead of killing him, and the two fought off the vultures together. He is feared because he is the only marksman who brings his own frontline: a second body that zones, scouts, tanks turret shots and bites whoever you point at. He is loved for the map control — traps that watch the river, a wolf that checks bushes so your face doesn't have to. The catch: Durability 3, no dash, and when Kupa dies you are a boy with a spear and a literal prayer. Half a hero, twice the homework.

Season 42 viability: the honest read

Patch paperwork first. Patch 2.2.16 (16 Sep 2026) did not touch Popol and Kupa — absent from the verified adjustment list, and blooing's complete 2.2.16 roundup, read end to end, mentions him once: as the season's ranked-reward skin hero. The documented 2.2.16a list (14 Oct 2026: Kalea buff; Aulus, Hirara, Eudora, Rafaela nerfs) has no Popol either — any claim he changed there is [UNCONFIRMED]. One rumour, filed correctly: GamingonPhone reports an Advanced Server experiment (2.2.22, updated in 2.2.26) testing a faster combat ramp-up and better ganking. That is the test server, not ranked — [UNCONFIRMED] for live. Fandom's patch-history page still tops out at Patch 1.8.20, when Moonton wanted him to "jungle faster and be more powerful in the late game". Season 42 Popol is the 1.8.20 Popol, winning anyway.

The trackers, dated (community snapshots, not Moonton data): - MLBBHub (statistics refreshed daily, checked 21 Oct 2026): S tier, #6 of 133 — 54.68% win rate, 0.43% pick, 0.31% ban. The highest win rate of any marksman in the game. - MLBBDex (tier list updated 19 Oct 2026, patch 2.2.16): S tier, Jungle · Gold Lane — 54.6% win rate, 0.4% pick, 0.3% ban. - MLBB.io (data updated 20 Oct 2026): A tier, climbed B→A — 54.7% win rate, 0.5% pick; "quietly winning over half its Jungle games in Mythical Glory+". - Pocket Gamer (Oct 2026): B among Marksmen — the editorial outlier; the data desks all say S or A. - MLCounter.com (older snapshot, page updated Aug 2026): 48.41% headline — stale; its matchup table is used below for matchups only.

Chorus: 54.6–54.7% win rate on every current desk. Sentiment: no fresh r/MobileLegendsGame Popol threads surfaced — tracker/creator material only: timesaver's Season 42 gold-lane roundup calls him the highest-WR marksman whose "duo mechanic rewards map control", plus ONE Esports' Blacklist jungle-Popol heritage story.

My tier verdict: A+. S-tier paperwork on both data desks, and I believe it — for the players actually picking him. At 0.43% pick, the average Popol game is played by someone who manages two bodies on purpose. Draft him blind into burst assassins and the spreadsheet will not save you.

The full kit: what every button does

All mechanics from the MLBB Fandom hero page, checked 21 October 2026. Base HP 2425→4385, Mana 445→1845, Physical Attack 95→193, Movement Speed 250, basic attack range 4.5. Moonton's ratings (via MLBB.io): Offense 7, Durability 3, Control 7, Difficulty 6. Released 21 April 2020. FOUR actives — the trap is its own button. - Passive — We Are Friends: Kupa is a real unit: 2500 (+1200% Total Physical Attack) Max HP, inheriting 100% of Popol's other attributes and equipment effects (excluding active, jungling and roaming items). Out of damage for 5 seconds, Kupa regenerates 10% Max HP per second. After Kupa lands 3 consecutive attacks on an enemy, Popol's next attack is enhanced to deal (+220% Total Physical Attack) Physical Damage on hit. If Kupa falls, Skills 1 and 2 become I Need You, Kupa! — a 3-second prayer (channel; keep it uninterrupted) that brings him back, on a 30-second cooldown. Fandom's note: if Popol dies, Kupa dies with him. And a creep-hybrid warning: Kupa takes full damage from Retribution. - Skill 1 — Bite 'em, Kupa!: Popol throws a spear for 80–170 (+100% Total Physical Attack), and Kupa bites the target for 100–190 (+100% Total Physical Attack) and keeps attacking it for 3 seconds. In Alpha Wolf Form: 3 rapid bites and a 1-second stun. Flat 6.5s cooldown, mana 50–80. The point-and-click that runs his early game. - Skill 2 — Kupa, Help!: Kupa rushes back to Popol: a 240–330 (+200% Extra Physical Attack) shield, 240–330 (+50% Total Physical Attack) damage to nearby enemies and a 35% slow for 0.5s; Kupa then assists for 3 seconds. Alpha Wolf Form: Kupa darts back and knocks nearby enemies airborne for 0.2s, shield and damage raised to 125%. Flat 6.5s cooldown, mana 80–110. His only peel — and his Kupa recall button in one. - Skill 3 — Popol's Surprise: a bear trap. After a short delay it detonates on whoever steps on it: 70–100 (+20% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage, immobilize 1 second, and a frost zone for 4 seconds cutting Movement Speed by 20%. Popol stores up to 3 traps (one charge every 22→16s), sets up to 3 at once, each lasting 60 seconds, and traps expose whoever trips them. Cooldown 1.5s, mana 60→30. - Ultimate — We Are Angry!: 12 seconds of Enraged. Both gain 15% Movement Speed; Kupa becomes the Alpha Wolf, gains +1500/2500/3500 Max HP and is fully healed, Skills 1 and 2 enhanced. Their Attack Speed is *multiplied* — Fandom's prose says "to 1.3 times", its level table prints 1.3/1.5/1.7 by rank; the table governs. Cooldown 38/35/32s, mana 100–140. - Skill priority, my way: Bite 'em, Kupa! maxed first — it is the damage, the poke and the engage. Kupa, Help! second. One early point in Popol's Surprise for vision, maxed last. We Are Angry! at 4/8/12. First point: Bite 'em, Kupa!.

Combos

  • The lane trade (1v9's pattern): Bite 'em, Kupa! → basics while Kupa mauls (his third attack arms your +220% spear) → if they counter-engage, Kupa, Help! for the shield and slow, then walk out behind your wolf.
  • The full send: We Are Angry! *as the fight starts* (Kupa arrives full-HP and Alpha) → Bite 'em, Kupa! — the 1-second stun bite → basics → Kupa, Help! for the airborne knock-up → spear basics to finish. Twelve seconds is a long time to be two carries.
  • The trapdoor: Popol's Surprise on the escape path *before* the trade → Bite 'em, Kupa! → when they run, they run into the trap: immobilized inside Kupa's jaws.
  • The peel: diver lands on Popol → Kupa, Help! (Alpha knocks airborne) → trap at your own feet → walk away while the frost zone argues with your guest.

Rotation and map control

Gold lane is the default desk, jungle the heritage flex — MLBBDex files him "Jungle · Gold Lane", MLBB.io's tracked builds lean jungle, and Patch 1.8.20 was a jungle-speed buff. Either way, the map habits are all about the wolf.

Kupa is a second health bar — spend it like one. He tanks camps, turret shots and Lord swings while you shoot from safety (1v9's lead-with-Kupa rule), and he checks bushes your face is too valuable for. Traps are wards, not lane decorations: three stored traps belong on the river entrance, the enemy's rotation path and the objective door. Trap the approaches before Turtle and Lord — a stepped-on trap is a free warning. Between fights, mind the regen rule — 5 seconds without damage and Kupa heals 10% Max HP per second — so pulling him out of a poke war (Kupa, Help! recalls him; walking out of his range does too — ONE Esports) refills the bar free. The famous second act still works: with ult up and a lane empty, Popol splits — Kupa eats the turret, Popol eats the turret's health bar — and few duos take a Lord faster once items land.

Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)

The core: Swift Boots → Windtalker → Demon Hunter Sword → Blade of Despair. Zathong's sustained set and 1v9 agree on this spine: Windtalker's chain lightning feeds two attackers' worth of farm speed, Demon Hunter Sword's %HP bite stacks with Kupa's inherited stats, and Blade of Despair executes whoever the wolf has softened. Spike: Windtalker + Demon Hunter Sword, ~minutes 8–10. Flex after: Berserker's Fury or Great Dragon Spear (1v9), Wind of Nature or Rose Gold Meteor against burst, Malefic Roar into armor stacks, Immortality last. Jungle fork: Tough Boots with Ice Retribution, same spine — ONE Esports' Blacklist build ran exactly that. Emblem — a real split: MLBB.io's tracked builds run Marksman most, with Thrill / Weapon Master / Quantum Charge the recurring row (Weapon Master in 5 of 7). VCGamers' jungle school runs Assassin — Thrill / Seasoned Hunter / Quantum Charge. My call: Marksman in gold, Assassin in the jungle; Quantum Charge either way — he has no dash, so borrowed speed is survival. Battle spell: Retribution in the jungle (Ice Retribution, 43% tracked), Flicker in gold lane (29% tracked; Zathong's gold default). No third school has current sourcing — Sprint is a Zathong-listed alt only.

How to counter him

Start with the measured edges. MLBB.io's guide FAQ (current-patch data) names Atlas, Hanabi and Carmilla — each mechanical, not vibes: Atlas yoinks Popol away from his wolf and groups both bodies for the follow-up; Hanabi's Petal Blades bounce between two targets side by side, so the duo feeds her passive; Carmilla's link shares damage across both bodies at once. MLCounter's matchup table (older dataset) gives the burst answer: Popol wins just 42% into Nolan (235 games) and 42% into Natalia (230) — assassins who ignore the wolf and delete the boy — then Argus 45% (325) and Esmeralda 47% (538). One disagreement, printed honestly: Zathong's older desk lists Esmeralda as Popol *food*; the measured table says he loses to her. Measured data governs. - Kill the wolf first — with AoE. Kupa is a creep-hybrid: he takes full Retribution damage (Fandom's notes), and every second spent hitting Popol while Kupa lives is a second spent fighting two heroes. - Fight him while the wolf is dead. The window is enormous: a 30-second cooldown *plus* a 3-second prayer Popol must stand still to complete — and any damage interrupts it. Catch him mid-pray and the duo is a solo act. - Cut the sustain. MLCounter's item answers: Sea Halberd, Glowing Wand and Dominance Ice tax Kupa's regen and the Kupa, Help! shield; Wind of Nature blanks the physical burst; Purify cleanses the Alpha stun and the trap's immobilize. Who he eats is the mirror: immobile gold laners the wolf zones off their own wave. MLCounter has him beating Zhask 58% (452 games), Granger 57% (435), Layla 56% (421), Wanwan 55% (242) and Kimmy 52% (344) — carries who cannot kill a 2500-HP wolf before it kills them.

Mistakes everyone makes

  • "The Free Funeral": letting Kupa die tanking poke you could have recalled him from. Out of damage for 5 seconds he heals 10% Max HP *per second* — the revive costs a 30s cooldown and a 3s stand-still prayer. Recall him (Kupa, Help!, or walk out of range — ONE Esports) and let the bar refill.
  • "The Solo Act": taking a fight with Kupa down. ONE Esports said it at release and it is still law: without Kupa, Popol is less than half the marksman he is designed to be. Farm safe, trap your feet, wait for the prayer.
  • "The Early Angry": pressing We Are Angry! at full Kupa HP — the ultimate *fully restores* his health, so a full-bar cast throws the heal away. Worse: ulting with Kupa dead, when there is no Alpha Wolf to enrage at all.
  • "The Lane Carpet": spending all three traps decorating your own lane. Traps are wards — river mouth, rotation path, objective door (1v9; Zathong). A trap under your turret watches nobody.
  • "The Open-Air Prayer": reviving Kupa in the open because the fight "might" come back. The prayer is a 3-second stationary channel that damage interrupts (Fandom). Pray behind a wall, behind a trap, or not at all.

FAQ

  • Did Patch 2.2.16 change Popol and Kupa? No — absent from the verified adjustment list; blooing's full roundup mentions him only as the season's ranked-skin hero. The 2.2.16a list has no Popol either; contrary claims are [UNCONFIRMED]. Last documented live change: Patch 1.8.20 (Fandom patch history).
  • Gold lane or jungle? Both desks file both. Gold is the default; jungle is the heritage pick with the faster objective game. Pick per draft, not per habit.
  • Why is his win rate S-tier if nobody plays him? Because the 0.43% who do are specialists, and the kit punishes drafts that can't split focus: kill the boy, the wolf mauls you; kill the wolf, the boy spears you for 30 free seconds.
  • What happens when Kupa dies? Skills 1 and 2 become I Need You, Kupa!: a 3-second prayer on a 30-second cooldown. No wolf, no bite, no shield, no Alpha form — Popol alone is half a hero until it lands (ONE Esports).
  • Marksman or Assassin emblem? Split. MLBB.io's tracked builds lean Marksman (Thrill / Weapon Master / Quantum Charge); VCGamers' jungle school runs Assassin (Thrill / Seasoned Hunter / Quantum Charge). Lane decides.

Final verdict

Popol and Kupa in Season 42 are what happens when a hero nobody drafts turns out to be the best marksman on the sheet: 54.6–54.7% win rate, S tier on both data desks, 0.31% ban — the ladder is sleeping on a duo that brings its own tank, wards and second health bar to a role defined by having none of those things. The price is real: you manage two bodies, one of which can die and take your kit with it, and the burst assassins who ignore the wolf are not going away. But learn the wolf — where he stands, when he rests, when he dies — and you are not playing a marksman. You are playing a small, furry army.

Play him if: your team needs a gold laner who creates his own safety, the enemy draft is short on dive assassins, and you enjoy winning the map before you win the fight. Also play him if you have ever wanted your frontline to fetch.

Skip him if: the enemy shows Nolan, Natalia or a dive comp that goes straight for the boy, your team needs a simple backline turret, or you'll forget the wolf the first time a fight gets loud. Popol without Kupa is a prayer. Literally — it's a 3-second channel.
