Freya MLBB Guide: Six Orbs, Twelve Seconds of Valkyrie (Season 42)

The revamp deleted Spirit Combo and half the internet never noticed. Current Freya: an orb-fed dive, a 12-second Valkyrie state, and a 48% win rate that pros still ban. Here's the real kit.

Why she's feared (and loved)

Lord pit, minute eleven, and I am not in the fight yet — I am above it. Valkyrie Descent doesn't walk into a teamfight, it lands on one: wings out, control-immune on the way down, 50% damage reduction for the dive, and a 40% slow painted across everyone I pass through. Then the twelve seconds start. My basics stretch to marksman range, splash onto the whole clump, heal me 60–120 HP a swing, and every hit banks another Sacred Orb to spend on Valkyrie Slash. That is the fear — a fighter who doesn't duel you, she descends on you, and for twelve seconds melee range belongs to her.

The love is newer. Freya is one of the game's original heroes, and for years she was a museum piece with a beautiful loading screen. Then the revamp landed on 5 November 2025 — new model, new story (the sister, Skuld; the lost Aurora Heart), and a kit rebuilt around the orb engine she always deserved. Ranked still barely touches her: 0.7% pick rate. But one MPL Philippines meta analysis from Season 18 had her banned 51 times in a single week — a 100% ban rate — because pro teams would rather delete her than solve her. Both lobbies are describing the same hero. One of them has coordination. The other has a 48% win rate.

Season 42 viability: the honest read

  • MLBBHub (Season 42, patch 2.2.16a, all ranks, last 7 days, checked 21 October 2026): 48.08% win rate, 0.7% pick rate, 1.99% ban rate — C tier, #108 of 133 heroes.
  • MLBBDex (tier list updated 19 October 2026): 48.2% win rate, 0.7% pick, 2.1% ban, filed at EXP Lane and Jungle.
  • MLBB.io (data updated 20 October 2026): B tier, dropped from A — 48.1% win rate, 0.7% pick; its statistics page reads 48.07% / 0.69% / 2.04%.
  • MLCounter.com (page updated 25 June 2026): no headline rate I trust for the chorus — its matchup table below is the useful part.

The chorus: 48.07–48.2% win rate, ~0.7% pick, ~2.0% ban. Patch honesty: Freya got no change in Patch 2.2.16 — she is absent from the verified adjustment list, and I read blooing's complete 2.2.16 roundup end to end: she appears in neither the buff/nerf tables, nor the Classic-mode pass, nor either Brawl column. The documented 2.2.16a list (Kalea buff; Aulus, Hirara, Eudora, Rafaela nerfs) has no Freya either, and that patch has no Fandom page — any claim of a 2.2.16a Freya change is [UNCONFIRMED]. Same label for an Advanced Server experiment (prabingiri) that moves her sustain into the passive and pushes the ult cooldown to 60s: the live page still prints a 34/30/26s ult cooldown and healing inside the Valkyrie state, so it is not live. Her last documented change is a Patch 2.1.88 NERF listing (VCGamers' Season 41 recap names her among the twelve nerfed heroes; the recap publishes no numbers). Before that, the big one: the full revamp of 5 November 2025.

My tier verdict: C+. The spreadsheet says C and I won't argue with it — but it's the loudest C on the board: a hero pros ban on sight and ranked forgets exists, whose entire problem is that her twelve best seconds need a team that notices them starting.

The full kit: what every button does

All mechanics from the MLBB Fandom hero page, checked 21 October 2026. Base HP 2550→5560, Physical Attack 120→242, Physical Defense 22→83, Magic Defense 15→50, Movement Speed 260 — and no mana at all; her resource is the Sacred Orb count. Basic attack range 1.5, stretching to 3.5 in the Valkyrie state. Moonton's ratings (via MLBB.io): Offense 5, Durability 6, Control Effects 5, Difficulty 5. One warning before the kit: half the internet still teaches the pre-revamp Freya — a Skill 2 called Spirit Combo and an ultimate that demanded 6 orbs before it would fire. That hero is gone. Sites still printing her (and her old 2801 base HP) are a patch behind; the live page governs.

  • Passive — Power of Einherjar: every basic attack earns 1 Sacred Orb, up to 6. Consuming an orb grants 100% Attack Speed for her next basic attack, stacking up to 6 — burn the bank and she swings like a machine gun. Orbs also refill gradually while she's out of combat, so a Freya walking back to lane is quietly reloading.
  • Skill 1 — Leap of Faith: she leaps to the target area and slams her shield down — gaining a 500–900 (+100% Total Physical Attack) shield, dealing 200–300 (+80% Extra Physical Attack) Physical Damage and knocking enemies airborne for 0.4s. Cooldown 8.0→6.0s. Engage, escape and a fat shield in one button — the shield scaling off Total Physical Attack is why damage items make her tankier.
  • Skill 2 — Valkyrie Slash: a forward charge-slash for 150–300 damage and a 30% slow for 0.5s. The strange part is the point: it has no base cooldown (0.4s between casts) but consumes 2 Sacred Orbs per cast — six orbs buys exactly three slashes, and only basics earn them back. Deals 50% damage to creeps, so it won't bail out your wave clear.
  • Ultimate — Valkyrie Descent: she picks a landing zone and dives in as a Valkyrie — Control Immunity and 50% Damage Reduction during the dive, a 40% slow for 2s on enemies in her path and at the landing point. On landing she enters the Valkyrie state for 12 seconds: basic attack range 3.5, basics deal +30–60 extra damage (cannot Crit), heal her 60–120 (+40% Total Physical Attack) per hit, and deal splash damage. Cooldown 34/30/26s. One honest flag: Fandom's own page argues with itself on the dive damage — the description prints 300–550 (+75% Total Physical Attack) while its level table prints 300/425/500. Both are quoted here; plan around the table.

Skill priority, my way: Valkyrie Descent at 4/8/12. Max Leap of Faith first — the shield (500→900) and the cooldown (8.0→6.0s) both scale there, and it's your only hard crowd control. Valkyrie Slash second: its damage grows, but its cast count is set by your orbs, not its level.

Combos

  • The orb bank: never start anything at zero. Hit the wave or a jungle camp until six orbs glow, because six orbs is three Valkyrie Slashes — walk in empty and you're a basic-attack hero with a dream.
  • The standard dive: bank orbs → Leap of Faith onto the target (airborne 0.4s, shield up) → basics to rebuild → Valkyrie Slash, basic, slash, basic. The weave is the combo (esports.gg's revamp guide stresses basics between every cast) — slash-spam alone bankrupts you in two seconds.
  • The coronation: Valkyrie Descent straight onto the clump — the dive can't be interrupted, the slow holds them for the landing — then twelve seconds of splash basics and slash-weaving at 3.5 range. Leap of Faith is still in your pocket: chase the runner, or leave. A Freya who ults and keeps her leap is a problem; one who spent both is a corpse with nice wings.

Rotation and map control

EXP lane is home — every tracker files her there first, jungle second. Her lane is an orb-management minigame: short trades when the bank is full, back off and let basics (or out-of-combat regen) refill it when it's not. She doesn't poke; she loads. Crash your wave before rotating, because her clear without orbs is slow and Valkyrie Slash taxes creeps at half damage.

Mid game, she plays the second wave of every fight. Let the first crowd control land somewhere else, then descend — the dive's control immunity means the interrupt has to catch her *after* she lands, and by then the slow and the splash are already working. Her Valkyrie window is also an objective tool: twelve seconds of ranged splash basics melt a turret's escort wave and let her hit the tower from 3.5 range. And when the window ends, it ends — a Freya standing in melee with no state, no orbs and no leap is the freest kill in the lobby. Play the twelve seconds like a fuse, because that's literally what it is.

Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)

Core: Corrosion Scythe → Sky Piercer. The two current build desks agree on the shape even when they disagree on everything else. Corrosion Scythe is first on esports.gg's revamp build and anchors MLBB.io's featured EXP build (which debates Scythe vs Golden Staff and lands on Scythe for the slow and early power): she has 1.5 attack range and no natural way to keep a target in it — the Scythe's stacking slow *is* her sticking power. Sky Piercer second (esports.gg; also the core of mobilelegendsfire's build) converts her dive into executions. After that: Endless Battle for the true damage, Haas's Claws or Malefic Roar/Gun by lobby, Immortality to close. Boots fork honestly: Tough Boots (esports.gg) into crowd control, Swift Boots (mobilelegendsfire's 90%-popularity pick) when you can swing freely.

Emblem: a real split, printed both ways. MLBB.io's tracked builds run Fighter in 6 of 10 (Thrill / Weapon Master / War Cry in 8 of 10). The creator school — esports.gg and mobilelegendsfire — runs Assassin (Thrill or Rupture / Seasoned Hunter in jungle, Weapon Master in lane / Killing Spree). My referee call: Fighter for EXP, where the tracked data lives; Assassin if you're jungling her. Battle spell: Inspire is the classic lane school (mobilelegendsfire's most popular at 80%, Zathong agrees) — it feeds the orb engine exactly when the dive lands. Flicker is the safety school and my pick into CC-heavy drafts; Retribution only in jungle (30% of MLBB.io's small 10-build sample — thin data, flagged as such). Nobody current leads with Vengeance on her; I found no sourced school, so it isn't one.

How to counter her

The measured podium agrees across desks. Phoveus is her worst matchup on MLCounter's table — she wins just 41% into him (277 games) — and MLBB.io names him her #1 counter too: every dash and slash feeds his kit. Minsitthar is the second consensus answer (MLBB.io, esports.gg, VCGamers): King's Calling deletes her mobility inside the zone, and a Freya who can't leap or slash-dash is a training dummy — she wins 45% into him (265 games). Then the kite-and-steal school: Melissa (47%, 190 games — her ultimate simply refuses melee entry, esports.gg's marksman pick), Esmeralda (48%, 233 games — she converts Freya's big Leap shield into her own HP, VCGamers), and Masha (43%, 134 games). MLBB.io adds Edith.

The anti-playbook: kite the twelve seconds. The Valkyrie state is a fuse, not a form — walk away, let the splash hit nobody, and re-engage a hero whose ult is now a 26–34s hole. Crowd-control her *after* the landing, not during the immune dive. Don't clump for the splash. Items: Dominance Ice (cuts her attack speed, healing and shield in one slot — esports.gg and VCGamers both name it), Sea Halberd / Glowing Wand for the anti-heal tax (MLCounter's named answers), Wind of Nature to survive the window as a marksman. And respect the reverse list: she eats the immobile and the dash-poor — MLCounter has her beating Zilong 57% (197 games), Sun 56% (214), Irithel 54% (255) and Odette 52% (266).

Mistakes everyone makes

  • "The Empty-Orb Dive": leaping in at zero orbs because the target looked tasty. No orbs means no Valkyrie Slash and no passive attack speed — you have voluntarily played half a hero. Bank first, dive second.
  • "The Early Coronation": firing Valkyrie Descent before your team's engage (or the enemy's escapes) are spent. Twelve seconds sounds long; against a team that simply walks away, it's a very expensive light show.
  • "The Minion Tax": burning orb-fed slashes and attack-speed basics into the wave thirty seconds before a Lord fight, then arriving at the fight reloading. Orbs spent on minions are slashes missing from the dive.
  • "The Eternal Chase": spending the whole Valkyrie window running after a Melissa or a Flicker instead of turning onto the turret or the nearest body. The window pays for what's in range. Chasing converts a steroid into cardio.
  • "The Old Hero": playing her from pre-revamp muscle memory — hoarding orbs for an ultimate that no longer asks for them, or looking for Spirit Combo's fourth cast. The revamp deleted that hero in November 2025; the guides still teaching her are the tell.

FAQ

  • Did Patch 2.2.16 change Freya? No. She's absent from the verified adjustment list and from blooing's full roundup (buffs, nerfs, Classic pass, both Brawl columns). The 2.2.16a list has no Freya either — contrary claims are [UNCONFIRMED]. Her last documented change is a Patch 2.1.88 nerf listing; before that, the 5 November 2025 revamp.
  • Is Spirit Combo really gone? Yes. The revamp replaced it with Valkyrie Slash — no cooldown, 2 orbs a cast, basics to reload. Any guide still coaching the four-cast Spirit Combo chain is teaching the retired kit.
  • EXP lane or jungle? EXP by default: every tracker lists it first and the tracked builds live there. Jungle is real (esports.gg's build is a jungle build) — take Retribution and the Assassin emblem if you run it.
  • Inspire or Flicker? Inspire if your job is winning the dive — it's the lane school's majority pick and it feeds the orb engine. Flicker into drafts whose CC would pin you after the landing. The honest split is greed vs insurance.
  • Why do pros ban her while ranked ignores her? The MPL Philippines Season 18 analysis put her at a 100% ban rate for a week: coordinated teams chain around her twelve seconds. Ranked teams don't — so she lands at 48% and a 0.7% pick rate, feared by the organised, forgotten by everyone else.

Final verdict

Revamped Freya is a twelve-second argument. Inside the Valkyrie window she is one of the most oppressive melee heroes in the game — ranged splash basics that heal her, a slash with no cooldown, a dive nobody can interrupt. Outside it, she's a 48% win rate fighter reloading her orbs on a minion wave, hoping the next fight starts on her schedule. The revamp fixed her kit; it could not fix her dependence on timing, orbs and a team that follows her down. Played patiently — banked, descended on the second wave, gone before the fuse dies — she still plays a full tier above her spreadsheet.

Play her if: you like dive fighters with a resource to manage, your team brings follow-up crowd control, and you can resist pressing the big button the second it lights up.

Skip her if: the enemy shows Phoveus or Minsitthar, you need your EXP laner to be useful at zero resources, or your idea of an ultimate is a button that works whenever — hers works for twelve seconds, on her terms, or not at all.
