Layla MLBB Guide: She Out-Ranges the Turret (Season 42)
A 49.7% win rate, the longest attack range in the game, an S on one desk and a trap-pick warning on another. Layla, read honestly: the range maths, the crit spike, and the drafts that delete her.
Why she's feared (and loved)
Minute nineteen, base race. Their inhibitor turret is up, their whole team is posturing in front of it, and nobody can work out where the turret's health is going. It's me. Level 15, ultimate maxed, standing outside the turret's attack range, critting it in the face while the enemy dives past me looking for a marksman who is legally not there. One finally spots me and sprints the full length of my range to reach me — paying the distance tax the whole way in, because my passive runs the meter in reverse: the farther my shots travel, the harder they land, up to 130% at six units (Fandom). That's Layla, the Energy Gunner, Eruditio's Shining Star (Fandom's lore) — the first marksman most players ever touched, and the one whose entire personality is a tape measure.
Feared, because late-game Layla doesn't join teamfights — she deletes them from a different postcode. Loved, because her kit has four buttons and none are complicated. Hated, if we're honest, because for ten minutes she is a 2,250-HP gold pinata with no dash, no escape, and a sign on her back that says *gank me, the range doesn't work yet*.
Season 42 viability: the honest read
Paperwork first — this is where guides lie to you.
Patch 2.2.16 (released 16 September 2026): Layla has no balance change. She's absent from the verified adjustment list (Masha/Bruno revamps + 22 adjustments), and blooing's complete 2.2.16 roundup — buffs, nerfs, tweaks, Classic pass, both Brawl columns, read end to end — mentions her zero times. Patch 2.2.16a (14 Oct 2026): the documented list (Kalea buff; Aulus, Hirara, Eudora, Rafaela nerfs) has no Layla, so any "secret Layla tweak" claim stays [UNCONFIRMED]. Her paper trail is ancient: Fandom's Layla patch-history page tops out at Patch 1.4.94 — a specialty label change (Reap → Reap/Damage); its last balance entry is 1.2.12 (Malefic Gun's damage floor rose 85% → 100%). Her last major surgery was her third revamp, 26 June 2023 (Project NEXT 2023, per her Fandom hero page).
The trackers, dated (community snapshots, not Moonton figures): - MLBBHub (Season 42, patch 2.2.16a, all ranks, last 7 days; checked 21 Oct 2026): B tier — 49.73% WR, 1.69% pick, 1.45% ban; rated Easy. - MLBBDex (tier list updated 19 Oct 2026): B tier in Gold Lane — 49.8% WR, 1.6% pick, 1.5% ban. - EliteDias (updated 15 Oct 2026): S tier on its all-hero board, on the same 49.7% — an editorial letter on a spreadsheet number. - MLBB.io (October 2026 insights): files her under Trap Picks — 47.3% WR in Gold Lane at the Mythical Glory+ cut, "not the carry pick people think it is," near the bottom of the marksmen.
The chorus: 49.7–49.8% on every all-ranks board, and the rank split is the story — the hero farming B-tier paperwork in the middle ranks falls to 47.3% where opponents dive on schedule. Sentiment: no fresh r/MobileLegendsGame Layla threads surfaced this season — tracker/creator material only, and MLBBHub's thesis is the honest one: a *distance tax* who wins by making chasing her feel expensive, and a liability with expensive items when nobody bodyguards her. My tier verdict: B-. The B is real at most ranks. The minus is the draft tax and the Glory+ collapse: no dash, no self-peel beyond a mini-stun, and a win condition that starts at level 12. Behind a bodyguard, into a walk-at-you comp, she's a siege engine. Blind her into double dive and you've drafted a respawn timer.
The full kit: what every button does
All mechanics from the MLBB Fandom hero page, checked 21 October 2026. Base HP 2250→4378, mana 500→1900, Physical Attack 133→252, MS 240, base attack range 4.3. Moonton ratings (via MLCounter): Durability 1, Offense 8, Control 1 — the most extreme stat line on the roster. Difficulty Easy (MLBBHub). - Passive — Malefic Gun: Layla's damage grows with distance: 100% up close, rising +5% per unit the projectile travels, up to 130% at 6 units. It applies to basic attacks *and* skills — not to turrets. The whole hero in one line: her damage stat is a range stat, and point-blank Layla is literally a weaker hero than far-away Layla. - Skill 1 — Malefic Bomb: A bomb in a line dealing 200–400 (+80% Total Physical Attack) to the first enemy hit — and it can crit. On hit, her Basic Attacks and Void Projectile gain extra range for 3 seconds (the bonus shrinks as her ultimate levels: +1.6 / 1.4 / 1.2 / 1.0), and she gains 60% Movement Speed decaying over 1.2s, doubled in duration if she tagged a hero. Cooldown 6.0→4.0s; mana 40–65. The trade button: tag something — even a front minion (MLBBHub's tip) — and take free autos from outside the enemy's world. - Skill 2 — Void Projectile: An orb that explodes on hit for 170–320 (+65% Total Physical Attack) in an area and applies a Magic Mark for 3 seconds. When Layla hits a marked enemy, nearby enemies take another 100–200 (+35% Total Physical Attack) and are stunned for 0.25s. Cooldown 7.5→6.5s; mana 65–90. Her only crowd control — a quarter-second hiccup, not a wall. Note: there is no slow in the current text — the 60% slow in old guides belongs to the pre-2023 kit. - Ultimate — Destruction Rush: A line blast for 500–800 (+150% Total Physical Attack); cooldown 37/32/27s; mana 130–170. The passive is the point: each rank adds +0.6 range to her Basic Attacks and Void Projectile (4.3 → 4.9 / 5.5 / 6.1) and widens her sight range. At level 12 the full stack — 6.1 base, 7.1 inside a Skill 1 proc — is the longest attack range in the game (Fandom trivia; possibly tied only with Zhask's Nightmaric Spawn), and it out-ranges turrets.
Skill priority, my way: ultimate at 4/8/12 (every rank is more hero), Malefic Bomb first — poke, crit and range window in one button — Void Projectile second.
Combos
- "The Handshake" (every trade, all game): Malefic Bomb tags a front minion or the enemy — range window opens, speed burst lands — take two or three basics from beyond their attack range at full passive value, then step back before the window closes. MLBBHub's lane script in one motion. No proc, no trade: walking up raw is how Layla donates first blood.
- "The Mark Pop": Skill 1 first for the range, Void Projectile onto the cluster second, then auto the marked enemy — the 0.25s stun and AoE pop interrupt their casts and punish the group behind them. Order matters (MLBBHub): Skill 2 is the follow-through, never the opener.
- "The Farewell Laser": Destruction Rush as the executioner, not the invitation — a 500–800 (+150%) line through a choke as the enemy commits, or the finisher on a fleeing hero who thinks they've left your range. They haven't. Nobody has.
Rotation and map control
Gold lane, and the first six minutes are a survival exam (MLBBHub): Skill 1 at level 1, trade only off its proc, and keep the wave on *your* half unless enemy roam and jungle are both showing. A boring lane state is a winning lane state on Layla — every early death is a donation toward the enemy's item lead and your own delay.
The spike is two items: Windtalker + Berserker's Fury, around minute 8–10 (MLBBHub). Before it you're a poke tax collector; after it, max-range crits delete arguments. Then level 12 flips the second switch: ultimate rank 3, 6.1 base range, turrets inside your range while you're outside theirs (Fandom). From there the map inverts — *they* defend into *your* firing line.
After the first outer turret falls, stop side-laning alone (MLBBHub's macro warning): group, take short rotations, let your frontline be what the enemy has to cross. Target selection is a discipline: hit the first reachable threat *without walking forward* — if an assassin has crossed into your half of the fight, he is the assignment, not the enemy mage you're fantasising about. Layla wins by never taking the step.
Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)
The locked core (MLBBHub; Zathong's and the Fandom guide's sets open the same way): Swift Boots → Windtalker → Berserker's Fury. Windtalker fixes her tempo, wave touch and movement; Berserker's Fury turns long-range hits into crit punishment; the pair is her 8–10 minute spike. Great Dragon Spear is MLBBHub's FAQ core fourth — post-ult movement to hold the angle. Flex, by lobby: Blade of Despair as the burst closer (Zathong's burst set); Malefic Roar when the frontline stacks armor (MLBBHub; Zathong); Malefic Gun — the item, not her passive — as the greed slot when spacing is already winning sieges (MLBBHub); Sea Halberd vs shields and regen stackers; Wind of Nature vs physical dive (the 2-second immunity is your second Flicker); Rose Gold Meteor vs magic burst. The older attack-speed school — Scarlet Phantom first — still circulates in pre-revamp builds, but the current consensus pays Windtalker's tempo first. Emblem: Marksman — Fatal / Weapon Master / Quantum Charge (MLBBHub). The Fandom guide's school runs Weakness Finder third for the slow-on-hit kiting; Quantum Charge's heal-and-haste is the tracked default. Battle spell: Flicker — near-unanimous (MLBBHub, Zathong, Fandom guide). She has no escape skill; Flicker is the escape skill. Purify is the documented alternative only into layered *non-suppression* CC (MLBBHub) — and neither spell answers Franco or Kaja's suppression. Position is the answer there.
How to counter her
Two tracker families, one verdict: reach her. Durability 1, no dash, and a quarter-second stun between her and the whole dive catalogue. MLBBHub's measured counters (refreshed daily) are the delivery school: Atlas, Sun and Johnson hold the biggest ranked edges — a five-man set, a clone swarm she can't out-range, a car that drives through her firing line. MLBBHub's draft warnings add the assassination school: Natalia, Harley, Ling, Hayabusa, Saber, Kaja and Franco all ask whether Layla keeps hitting after the first collapse — she doesn't. MLCounter's matchup table (older, small samples — direction, not gospel) prices the same class: she wins just 45% vs Natalia (165 games), 46% vs Fanny (176), 47% vs Saber (203), 48% vs Alucard, 49% vs Hayabusa. - Items: Blade Armor and Dominance Ice punish her attack-speed crit engine; Antique Cuirass and Queen's Wings survive the first volley (Zathong); Wind of Nature buys a diving physical carry the two seconds her stun can't. - Play patterns: dive her *before* the Windtalker–Fury window, not after; stand behind your minions against Malefic Bomb (first-hit rule — the wave eats her range proc); count cooldowns: Skill 1 down shuts her trading window, Flicker down means she lives where she stands; and end on schedule — every minute past fifteen, the tape measure gets longer. Who she counters — also measured (MLCounter): Yi Sun-shin 57%, Rafaela 56%, Balmond 55%, Vale 54% — plus MLBBHub's draft rule: honest front-to-back comps whose carries must walk into her line and pay the tax in public.
Mistakes everyone makes
- "The Blind Date": Locking her into double dive because the lane matchup looked calm (MLBBHub). If two enemy heroes can cross the screen before your team peels once, you're not a late-game carry — you're a liability with expensive items.
- "The Opener Orb": Leading with Void Projectile because it looks like the control spell (MLBBHub). It's the follow-through after Skill 1 bought the spacing; opening with it means walking into their range to make yours matter.
- "The Ego Flicker": Burning Flicker (or Purify) for a greedy level-3 kill (MLBBHub). On a hero with no escape, the spell *is* the survival plan — spend it on ego and the first real roam path ends your lane.
- "The Hermit Siege": Side-laning alone after the first outer turret falls because the spike made you feel strong (MLBBHub). Windtalker + Fury makes her a siege problem, not a duelist; long side lanes turn every missing icon into a death timer.
- "The Range Delusion": Reading "longest range in the game" as "allowed to stand anywhere" (MLBBHub). Range buys the first answer, not the fight — lazy bush checks and one step into fog are how Layla deaths get filed.
FAQ
- Did Layla change in Season 42? No. Absent from 2.2.16's verified list and blooing's full roundup; 2.2.16a's documented list excludes her too — anything else is [UNCONFIRMED]. Fandom's patch-history page for her tops out at 1.4.94 (a label change); her last major work was the June 2023 revamp.
- How can she be S tier and a trap pick at the same time? Rank, mostly. All-ranks boards (MLBBHub, MLBBDex) park her at 49.7–49.8%, B tier; EliteDias prints an S on the same number; MLBB.io's Mythical Glory+ cut drops her to 47.3% and files her under Trap Picks. Same hero, different quality of dive.
- How does the range actually stack? 4.3 base. Each Destruction Rush rank adds 0.6 — 4.9, 5.5, then 6.1 at level 12 — and a landed Malefic Bomb adds up to 1.6 more for 3 seconds (1.0 at max ultimate), peaking at 7.1 units: the longest attack range in the game, turrets included (Fandom).
- Is Nolan actually her dad? Yes — Fandom's story pages confirm it. Her page runs a chapter titled "Who Is Nolan?", her Malefic Gun was built by her mother Lillian *and* her father, and his story is the sixteen-year multiverse fall to get home to his daughter.
- Flicker or Purify? Flicker, by default and by consensus (MLBBHub; Zathong; Fandom guide). Purify only into layered CC with no suppression in it. Against Franco or Kaja, no spell saves you — spacing does.
Final verdict
Layla in Season 42 is the game's simplest carry and one of its hardest drafts: B-tier paperwork on the live trackers, an S letter from EliteDias, a trap-pick warning from MLBB.io, and a kit honest enough to print its strategy on the passive — stand far away, hit hard, never be reached. Get her bodyguarded to level 12 and she forecloses on the late game, critting turrets from beyond their jurisdiction. Draft her into two divers and a delivery tank, and she's a 2,250-HP tutorial memory.
Play her if: your roam or tank will actually bodyguard (Atlas and Johnson on *your* side are a dream), the enemy wins fights by walking in the front door, and you'll play the boring first ten minutes like they matter — on Layla, they're the whole game.
Skip her if: the enemy shows Natalia, Ling, Hayabusa, Fanny or a suppression hook, your team is four gamblers and no peel, or you need your gold lane online before minute ten. Take Hanabi or Obsidia and start your own fights. Layla doesn't start fights — she ends sieges, from the next screen over.
