Hanabi MLBB Guide: Shoot the Tank, Kill the Team (Season 42)
The most-picked hero in MLBB right now: shoot the tank, bounce the whole team, and stay CC-immune behind a shield that refills itself.
Minute thirteen, Lord pit, and the enemy team does the thing every Hanabi main prays for: they clump. Five heroes stacked on the pit entrance like they're posing for a group photo. I don't aim at their carry. I aim at their tank, the big lad in front — and my shuriken does the introductions for me, bouncing face to face to face, their backline melting from a basic attack that never touched them. Then the Higanbana blooms in the middle of the pile and nobody is allowed to leave. That's Hanabi. Welcome in. She's the Scarlet Flower, leader of the Scarlet Sect — and right now, per MLBBHub's live statistics (checked 21 October 2026), the single most-picked hero in the entire game at a 2.56% pick rate. Everyone is playing her. This guide is about playing her properly.
Why she's feared (and loved)
Fear first: Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage means Hanabi never attacks one hero. Every basic attack and skill hit launches Petal Blades that ricochet up to four times — into the wave, into the tank, into the mage who thought standing behind the tank made her safe. Clustered teams don't take her damage. They share it.
Love second: she is the only marksman who can look crowd control in the eye and keep shooting. The passive half of Ninjutsu: Equinox makes her immune to control effects whenever she has a shield from any source — and her own active hands her a fat one that refills as she deals damage. A Hanabi with her shield up isn't a squishy gold laner. She's a turret with diplomatic immunity.
Season 42 viability: the honest read
Paperwork first — this is where guides lie to you.
Patch 2.2.16 (released 16 September 2026): Hanabi took a NERF, and it's an honest one. Per blooing's complete 2.2.16 roundup — cross-checked against VCGamers' Season 42 recap, which lists her among the patch's nerfed heroes — repeated Petal Blade bounces on the same target now deal 30% less damage each time, capping her single-target burst. Bouncing between two parked targets was quietly deleting people; Moonton taxed exactly that. Her spread damage into a genuinely clustered team is untouched. (She also appears in the patch's Brawl-mode "toned down" column — a mode footnote, not a ranked change.) Patch 2.2.16a (14 Oct 2026): the documented list — Kalea buff; Aulus, Hirara, Eudora, Rafaela nerfs — has no Hanabi, and with no Fandom page for the sub-patch, any "secret Hanabi tweak" claim stays [UNCONFIRMED]. An advance-server 2.2.26 note about reduced Hanabi stats is test-server only — [UNCONFIRMED] for live.
The trackers, dated (community snapshots, not Moonton figures): - MLBBHub (Season 42, patch 2.2.16a, all ranks, last 7 days; checked 21 Oct 2026): the most-picked hero in the game at 2.56% pick rate. - MLBBDex (tier list updated 20 Oct 2026): S tier in Gold Lane — 52.5% WR, 2.5% pick, 5.0% ban — captioned "well played and above average across all ranks, but significantly less effective in Mythic Glory and in longer games." - EliteDias (updated 15 Oct 2026): S tier, 52.6% WR. - MLCounter.com (updated 15 Oct 2026): Moonton's own ratings — Durability 2, Offense 7, Control 8. Read the Durability 2 twice. It's the whole hero.
The chorus: 52.5–52.6% win rate on the biggest pick sample in the game — elite popularity, above-average results, and one consistent footnote from MLBBDex that the magic fades at the highest ranks and in long games. Sentiment: no fresh r/MobileLegendsGame Hanabi threads surfaced this season — tracker/creator material only. My tier verdict: A+. The trackers' S is earned at most ranks, but she ate a nerf aimed at her cheekiest trick, she owns zero mobility in a dive meta, and MLBBDex's high-rank fade is real. A+ teamfight — with a Durability 2 warning label.
The full kit: what every button does
All mechanics from the MLBB Fandom hero page, checked 21 October 2026. Base HP 2260→4052, mana 500→1900, MS 245, range 4.8. Hidden attribute (Fandom): her Lifesteal Ratio is 80% — lifesteal items pay her at a discount. - Passive — Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage: Basic Attacks and Skills launch Petal Blades on hit, bouncing up to 4 times to nearby enemies. The first bounce deals 40% of the damage; subsequent bounces deal 85% of the previous bounce. Basic-attack bounces inherit a portion of Attack Effects — on-hit items fire on every face the petal visits. Fine print (Fandom): blades can bounce repeatedly onto the same enemy; no bounce if the target dies; basics won't bounce to invisible enemies but will bounce to concealed ones in sight; attacking a turret triggers no bounces, though a bounce can land on a turret. - Skill 1 — Ninjutsu: Equinox: Two skills wearing one coat. Passive part: Hanabi is immune to control effects while she has a shield from ANY source — hers, an ally's, an item's (Suppression still lands — Fandom's Control Immunity terms exclude it; it prevents incoming CC, it does not cleanse debuffs already on her; she has this even before learning the skill). Active: gain a 300–600 (+40% Total Physical Attack) shield for 5s; while it's up, +20% Movement Speed, +25% Attack Speed, and 20% of damage she deals refills the shield (only 10% from non-hero units), capped at 50% of her max HP. Cooldown 14→12s; mana 35–60. Her lifesteal, her steroid and her Purify, all in one button. - Skill 2 — Ninjutsu: Soul Scroll: Fires an energy kunai in a line: 450–600 (+80% Total Physical Attack) Physical Damage and a 60% slow for 1s. Enemies hit are marked — her next bounce damage against them deals an extra 30–180 (+100% Total Physical Attack) with no damage decay. Cooldown 8→6s; mana 35–60. The no-decay mark is her tank-tax: one scroll, then the petals pay full price. - Ultimate — Forbidden Jutsu: Higanbana: Throws the Higanbana in a direction: the first enemy hero hit takes 300–500 (+50% Total Physical Attack) and is immobilized for 0.8s. After 1 second, the flower blooms at that spot, dealing 300–500 (+50% Total Physical Attack) to nearby enemies; repeat hits on the same target decay 20% damage. A root with a flower attached — land it on the front of a clump and the bloom taxes everyone in the photograph.
Skill priority, my way: ultimate whenever offered, Equinox first (shield size, steroid and survival scale together), Soul Scroll second.
Combos
- "The Group Photo": Soul Scroll through the frontline to mark it → Equinox on → basic attacks into the tank. The scroll's no-decay mark pays full price on the first bounce chain, the shield's attack speed keeps the petals flying, and the damage you deal refills the shield that's keeping you CC-immune. Front door in, everyone pays.
- "The Flower Delivery": Forbidden Jutsu: Higanbana onto the front hero of a grouped team — not the carry hiding at the back. The immobilize holds the shape still for the 1-second bloom, and your bounce chains arrive while they're posing. Root first, fireworks second — reverse the order and they walk out of the frame.
- "The Shield Waltz" (survival): the moment a diver commits, Equinox first, attacks second. Hitting back isn't greed — every point of damage refills the shield (20% vs heroes) that keeps their CC switched off. Standing still and tanking is how Hanabi dies; shooting back is how she doesn't.
Rotation and map control
Early game is a loan. Hanabi's lane is weak: no dash, Durability 2, bounces that need items before they hurt. Farm the gold lane like it owes you money, poke and mark with Soul Scroll from safety, and accept you're a scaling pick, not a level-2 skirmisher. Bounce craft starts here: hit the minion wave standing next to your lane opponent — the petals use the wave as a bridge and tax him for standing near his own farm.
The spike is three items. Once the on-hit core lands (~mid game), she stops being a laner and becomes a teamfight tax on grouping. Play her like it. Sit behind your frontline at objectives, attack whatever is closest — the kit redistributes the damage for you — and never face-check the river bush. Her map control is negative space: the enemy cannot group for Lord, cannot siege as five, cannot stand in a doorway. And mind MLBBDex's footnote — her edge fades in longer games, so convert the spike into turrets and Lords instead of admiring it.
Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)
Two schools, and the lobby decides. The consensus core is attack-speed on-hit (Zathong's "Trinity" framing, mirrored by JollyMax's creator guide): Swift Boots → Corrosion Scythe → Demon Hunter Sword → Golden Staff → Blade of Despair. Why it wins: every bounce carries attack effects — Corrosion Scythe's slow lands on all four bounce targets, Demon Hunter's %HP burn taxes the frontline she bounces off, and Golden Staff converts crit chance into raw attack speed at full RPM. Flex: Malefic Roar into stacked armour; Wind of Nature when a physical assassin has your number; Immortality as the standard sixth. The crit school lives too (Fandom's own Hanabi guide sets): Windtalker / Scarlet Phantom / Berserker's Fury / Blade of Despair / Haas's Claws with Swift Boots. Bigger individual hits, and Haas's Claws feeds the shield economy — remember her 80% Lifesteal Ratio discount before judging it. Into spread-out, dive-heavy lobbies where bounces starve, crit is the honest pick; into grouped front-to-back teams, Trinity prints money. Emblem: Marksman — Weakness Finder is the consensus third talent (Fandom guide and JollyMax agree): her basics slow the diver's hands while she kites. JollyMax runs Agility / Weapons Master in front of it; Fandom's guide pairs it with Electro Flash. Assassin emblem is the legacy alt — skip it. Battle spell: Flicker by default (Fandom guide; JollyMax calls it the safer solo-queue option) — she has no dash, and Flicker is the only reposition she'll ever own. Inspire is the greed pick when your roam babysits you and the enemy dive is thin (JollyMax's late-game pick). Aegis is the third way (Fandom guide) — a second shield is a second CC-immunity window.
How to counter her
Two tracker families, one verdict: she is a Durability-2 hero with no dash whose entire defence is a shield with conditions. Break the conditions. MLCounter.com's measured matchups (updated 15 Oct 2026): Hanabi wins just 41% vs Natalia (256 games), 44% vs Hayabusa (322), 47% vs Fanny (754), 48% vs Melissa, 49% vs Brody. MLCounter's role note names the school: assassins with burst, mobility and suppression. - Suppression ignores the shield trick: her Control Immunity excludes Suppression (Fandom) — Franco's Bloody Hunt and Kaja still stop her mid-shield. Fandom's counter notes say it plainly: use suppression to ignore her passive immunity. - Starve the shield: the immunity ends when the shield does. Burst through it before she refills it with damage — and anti-heal items cut her shield gain (Fandom guide), so a Hanabi whose shield won't refill is a marksman standing in the open. - Spread out: Fandom's counter notes and MLCounter agree — don't stand near allies or minions in a fight. Her passive bounces up to 4 times; spacing is a 4-target nerf you apply for free. - Purify the flower: Forbidden Jutsu: Higanbana's immobilize is cleansable (both counter sources) — Purify deletes her one hard CC. Who she counters — also measured (MLCounter): Minotaur 58% (415 games), Johnson 57% (643), Chou 55%, Akai 52%, Layla 51% (954). Immobile, clustered, front-to-back teams — she is a tax on standing together.
Mistakes everyone makes
- "The Statue": Standing still and trading autos with the shield down. No shield = no immunity, no steroid, no refill — you're a 2260-HP target with a nice hat. If Equinox isn't up, your positioning has to do its job.
- "The Single-Flower Ult": Throwing Higanbana at one fleeing hero at max range. The bloom needs an audience; a one-man root on a 0.8s timer is the worst trade in her kit. Hold it for the clump or the objective door.
- "The Wrong Build for the Lobby": Trinity into a spread dive comp (no bounce targets, no value) or full crit into a grouped tank wall (no %HP tax). The two schools exist because lobbies differ — read the draft, not the guide screenshot.
- "The Face-Check": Warding the river alone at minute ten. Durability 2, zero dashes — a caught Hanabi isn't a trade, it's a donation. Let the roam's face do the checking.
- "The Early Hero": Forcing level-2 trades because the trackers say S tier. Her S tier is a mid-game teamfight grade; her early lane is a loan repaid with farm. Die twice early and the spike arrives after the game ends.
FAQ
- Did the 2.2.16 nerf kill her? No. It taxed repeated bounces on the same target (−30% per repeat, per blooing) — her two-target bounce shredding. Spread damage into real clumps is untouched, and she's still the most-picked hero in the game (MLBBHub, 21 Oct 2026) at 52.5–52.6% WR.
- How does the CC immunity actually work? Any shield on her — Equinox, an ally's, an item's — switches off incoming crowd control while it lasts (Fandom). Suppression is the exception, and the immunity prevents new CC; it doesn't cleanse what's already on her.
- Trinity or crit build? Trinity (Corrosion Scythe / Demon Hunter Sword / Golden Staff) into grouped, tanky teams — every bounce carries the on-hit effects. Crit (Windtalker / Scarlet Phantom / Berserker's Fury) when the enemy spreads and dives and bounces starve. Lobby decides.
- Flicker or Inspire? Flicker by default — no dash in the kit means Flicker is her only reposition. Inspire only with a babysitting roam and thin enemy dive.
- Why does she fall off at high ranks? MLBBDex's caption: significantly less effective in Mythic Glory and in longer games. Coordinated divers don't let a no-dash marksman free-hit, and long games give every assassin six items to spend on her.
Final verdict
Hanabi in Season 42 is the people's marksman: the most-picked hero in the game, an S-tier teamfight on two trackers, and a kit that turns the enemy's good positioning into a group discount on dying. The nerf was fair, the shield is real, and the Durability 2 is also real. Play her if: your team has a frontline to hide behind, the enemy comp groups to fight (tanks, Johnson/Minotaur-style engage, siege comps), and you'll farm patiently to the three-item spike.
Skip her if: the enemy draft shows Natalia, Hayabusa or Fanny with your name on them, nobody can peel, or you need your gold laner to win the first four minutes. Hanabi doesn't win lanes. She wins the photograph the enemy team takes at the Lord pit.
