Z-A is the boldest battle system Pokémon has ever shipped. No turns: you and your Pokémon move in real time, moves have ranges and cooldowns, and wild Pokémon can knock YOU out. By day you hunt in Lumiose's wild zones; by night the Z-A Royale battle zones open and you climb from Rank Z to A, chasing rogue Mega Evolutions across the rooftops.

The good stuff

Real-time combat that actually works — positioning and timing finally matter. Mega Evolution returns, including rogue Mega boss fights all over the city. One city, densely packed: rooftops, canals, cafés, wild zones behind the scaffolding. The Switch 2 edition runs at a smooth, higher frame rate — the way it's meant to be played.

Your first few moves

  1. Learn to dodge. Trainer knockouts send you back and cost you — treat wild zones like action-game arenas.
  2. Climb everything: the best spawns and Mega Stones are on the rooftops.
  3. Battle zones at night are the fastest rank climb — go in with bonus card challenges active.

Before you jump in

The trade-offs are scope and feel. The whole game is one city, and players who wanted a region to explore bounced off it. The loudest visual complaint: the buildings — flat, 2D-looking textures pasted onto walls, like the city is wearing printed cardboard. And the cosiness is gone: older Pokémon games felt warm and homely; Lumiose feels busy and sterile by comparison, a city you work in rather than live in. The Metacritic user score is 4.8 against a critic score of 78 for the Switch 2 edition. On Switch 2 it performs well; on the original Switch, expect compromises.

This one’s for you if…

Action-RPG players who want Pokémon battles in real time — dodging, aiming and Mega Evolution chaos.

Questions before you play

Is it turn-based?

No — battles are real-time for the first time in a mainline Pokémon RPG.

Switch or Switch 2 version?

The Switch 2 edition has improved performance and resolution; the Switch version is upgradable via a pack.

Do I need to play X/Y first?

No. It's set in the same city years later — returning faces are a bonus, not homework.
