Galar is Pokémon doing Britain — rolling green hills, industrial cities, and gym battles staged like football finals in front of roaring crowds. Sword & Shield took the series off handhelds and onto the TV in 2019, and the Wild Area — a free-roaming open zone with roaming Pokémon and co-op Max Raid Battles — was the first real peek at where the series was heading.

The good stuff

The Wild Area: free camera, weather that changes the encounters, Pokémon roaming in the open. Max Raid Battles: four trainers vs one giant Dynamax Pokémon — still a great co-op loop. Gym battles as stadium spectacles, with the crowd chanting along. Two full expansions (Isle of Armor, Crown Tundra) that add the best areas in the game.

Your first few moves

  1. Your starter matters less than coverage — Galar throws a lot of Water and Flying types at you early.
  2. Raid dens in the Wild Area are the fastest early XP and candy source. Hit them whenever you pass.
  3. Watts (the Wild Area currency) buy the best TMs early from the wandering vendors.

Before you jump in

The honest caveat: this is the generation that cut the National Dex — not every older Pokémon can be transferred in, and that decision (plus some reused animations) is why the Metacritic user score sits at 4.8 while critics gave it 80. The routes between towns are also short and linear. What you get is a charming, polished, very British Pokémon adventure — just not the ambitious one.

This one’s for you if…

Pokémon fans who want the big TV-console adventure — and anyone curious where modern Pokémon started changing.

Questions before you play

Sword or Shield?

Same game, different box legendary (Zacian vs Zamazenta) and a handful of exclusives. Pick the wolf you like looking at.

Do I need the Expansion Pass?

Not for the main story, but the Crown Tundra's legendary hunts are the best postgame in the game.

Can I play it on Switch 2?

Yes — Nintendo lists it as Switch 2 compatible.
