Harley MLBB Guide: The Ring Always Collects (Season 42)
A 47.6% win rate, a Trap Pick label at Mythical Glory+, and a ring that bills its target twice. Harley's 2.1.88 tax, the nine-minute shred spike, and the hat everybody camps — Season 42.
Why he's feared (and loved)
The enemy Layla is having a careful game. Full health, tank in front, not a step out of place. Then a ring of fire closes around her from a bush she never saw — 40% slow — and a child in a magician's hat blinks straight through her front line. Cards fan out point-blank, all of them into her, and the kid just stands there auto-attacking like he owns the lane. Four seconds later the ring detonates for half of everything he just did to her, and Harley is already back at his hat, two walls away, adjusting his bow tie.
That's Harley, the Mage Genius of the Magic Academy — Lesley's little brother, the Vance heir who faked magic tricks for his father's attention until real magic answered during a kidnapping (Fandom's story). Feared, because his ultimate is a receipt: everything he does to you for four seconds comes back as a second bill. Loved, because no other jungler deletes a carry and leaves via hat. The catch: he does it in melee range, on a mage's health bar, and the exit only works if nobody is camping the hat.
Season 42 viability: the honest read
Patch paperwork first. Patch 2.2.16 (16 September 2026) did not change Harley in ranked — confirmed two ways: he is absent from the verified adjustment list (Masha/Bruno revamps + 22 adjustments), and blooing's complete roundup, read end to end, mentions him only in the Brawl-mode "buffed" column — a mode footnote with no ranked numbers attached. Patch 2.2.16a (14 Oct 2026): the documented list (Kalea buff; Aulus, Hirara, Eudora, Rafaela nerfs) has no Harley — any claimed tweak stays [UNCONFIRMED]. His last documented ranked change is Season 41's Patch 2.1.88 nerf: VCGamers' recap files him among the nerfed, and MLBBHub details it — a full Space Escape cycle now costs noticeably more mana and sits on a longer cooldown, which is why Blue buff stopped being optional. Two live-text disputes, flagged honestly: MLBBHub claims Deadly Magic lost its body-block and the return kept its speed boost "since 2.1.30" — Fandom's current text still says the ring *can be blocked* and returning *loses* the boost. Fandom governs below.
The trackers, dated (community snapshots, not Moonton figures): - MLBBHub (refreshed daily; checked 21 Oct 2026): 47.6% win rate, 0.8% pick rate, 3.4% ban rate — Jungle first, Mid second. - MLBBDex (tier list updated 19 Oct 2026, patch 2.2.16): B tier, Jungle · Mid — 47.6% win rate, 0.8% pick, 3.5% ban. Same win rate as Hub to the decimal. - MLBB.io (October 2026 insights): files him under Trap Picks — 47.9% in Mid Lane and "still a common pick in Mythical Glory+. Not the easy win people expect." - MLCounter (page updated 31 May 2026): 50.46% and an A — an older dataset than the three desks above; noted, not averaged in. - Pocket Gamer (tier list, 17 Oct 2026, editorial): S tier among Mages — the room's optimist, rating the kit rather than the current numbers.
The chorus: 47.6–47.9% win rate everywhere that refreshes, on the highest pick rate left in the Assassin queue. Sentiment: no fresh r/MobileLegendsGame threads surfaced — tracker/creator material only, and the creator read (MLBBHub) is blunt: "Harley is not a mage. He is a basic-attack assassin who happens to deal magic damage." My tier verdict: B-. The minus is the tax on honesty: sub-48% on every live desk, a Trap Pick label at the rank where he's most picked, and a combo that three draft answers (silence, grounding, a camped hat) switch off completely.
The full kit: what every button does
All mechanics from the MLBB Fandom hero page, checked 21 October 2026. Base HP 2501→4356, Mana 500→1900, Physical Attack 114→201, Physical Defense 19→72, Magic Defense 15→50, Attack Speed 1.06→1.27, Movement Speed 240, basic attack range 4.5. Ratings (via MLCounter): Durability 3, Offense 9, Control 1. One naming correction up front: the passive is Magic Master — "Master of Magic" is a fan rendering, not Fandom's name. - Passive — Magic Master: Harley's basic attacks deal 60 (+50% Total Physical Attack) (+60% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage — triggering attack effects and Magic Lifesteal. Every attack also reduces the enemy's Magic Defense by 2 for 3 seconds, stacking to 10 (−20 at full stacks). His autos are spells, his spells feed his autos, and every second he spends hitting you makes the next second hurt more. - Skill 1 — Poker Trick: Harley throws 3–5 waves of cards (3/3/4/4/5/5 by rank) in the target direction, each dealing 130–210 (+25% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage to the first enemy hit and granting him 10% Attack Speed for 3 seconds — stacking 5–10 times by rank, so 50–100% Attack Speed at full stacks. Enemies hit more than 3 times take reduced damage from further hits. Flat 6.0s cooldown, 90–115 mana. Point-blank, all waves on one target is the burst; from range it's a stacking tool. - Skill 2 — Space Escape: Harley blinks in the target direction — through obstacles — leaving his magic hat behind and gaining +30% Movement Speed for 2 seconds. Recast within 4 seconds to return to the hat, losing the speed boost on arrival (Fandom's text; see the dispute above). Cooldown 8.5→6.5s, 60–110 mana. The hat is visible to everyone — an appointment, not a secret. - Ultimate — Deadly Magic: Harley casts a ring of fire on a target enemy hero — can be blocked by other heroes (Fandom) — dealing 200–400 (+60% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage and slowing 40% for 1.5 seconds. The ring stays 4 seconds; during it, Harley damages the marked enemy by hitting the ring with his skills. When it expires, it explodes for 100–200 (+30% Total Magic Power) plus 50% of all damage the enemy took during those 4 seconds. Cooldown 36/33/30s. A loan, repaid at half interest, all at once.
Skill priority, my way: ultimate at 4/8/12, Poker Trick first (more cards, more stacks, faster autos — the combo's engine), Space Escape second for the cooldown your life depends on. Take Poker Trick at level 1: it's the clear and the trade.
Combos
- "The Receipt" (the signature): Deadly Magic from the bush at range → once the slow lands, Space Escape in → Poker Trick point-blank, every wave into the ringed target → hold the auto-attack button until the ring is under one second → recast Space Escape out as it pops. MLBBHub's law: ult first, dash second — dashing in first tips your hand and spends your exit as an entrance.
- "The Level-4 Rude Awakening": no ult needed. Space Escape in from fog → Poker Trick → stacked autos. Hub's note: a boots-less gold laner dies to this before Deadly Magic even exists.
- "The Primed Shred": before the fight, tag the enemy tank with an auto or two from a safe angle — the shred stacks sit on him for your whole team (MLBBHub tip).
Rotation and map control
Jungle is home — MLBBHub files him Jungle first, MLBBDex lists Jungle · Mid, and Hub is blunt that mid Harley with Flameshot is "a worse version of the hero." The clear has one twist: Magic Master scales off Physical Attack too, so auto between every cast and he out-clears most magic junglers. Post-2.1.88, Blue buff is not optional: the Space Escape cycle costs real mana now, and arriving at gold lane without enough for combo-plus-exit is arriving to donate.
The first kill attempt is level 4, not 6 (MLBBHub) — the window where the enemy gold laner has no boots and one point in their escape. Rotate for the 1:45 Turtle only if your gold lane shows; solo-contesting into Baxia, Fredrinn or Lapu-Lapu loses two levels to an invade. The spike is Arcane Boots + Genius Wand, around nine minutes without a death: Wand's shred stacks on Magic Master's −20, and squishies start fighting his damage at effectively negative magic resistance. That's when the ring stops leaving targets at 20%. Late, he fades — single-target burst into five Athena's Shields is a magician sawing his own assistant in half. End on the spike.
Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)
The locked start (MLBBHub): Arcane Boots (Ice Retribution) → Genius Wand. Ten flat penetration plus two stacking shred sources is the whole early argument. Starlium Scythe third — the item Hub says most guides undersell: its Crisis passive adds true damage to the auto after each cast, and that true damage *feeds the ring's damage-taken formula*, so every Poker Trick inside the window pays twice. Holy Crystal fourth (raw power — Hub warns forcing it second cuts the penetration curve, the weakest common default). Then Divine Glaive once Athena's/Radiant appear, Glowing Wand if nobody buys magic defense, and Winter Crown sixth — its active invulnerability answers the follow-up CC waiting at your landing spot; Immortality only vs zero-lockdown drafts. The second school (Zathong's jungle set) runs Feather of Heaven — attack speed feeding Magic Master's shred stacking — a real fork: Scythe for ring maths, Feather for auto volume. Emblem: Mage — Rupture / Seasoned Hunter / Lethal Ignition (MLBBHub; VCGamers' talent guide agrees line for line). Mid-lane school swaps Seasoned Hunter for Bargain Hunter (1v9 guide). Battle spell: Retribution (Ice) in jungle — non-negotiable for objective secures on a squishy body. Mid Harley runs Flameshot (Zathong) for the execute after the ring pops — Hub still calls that version of the hero worse, and so do I.
How to counter him
MLBBHub's measured top three: Lolita, Sun and Hilda hold the biggest measured edges against him in ranked. Lolita's shield eats and returns the card fan; Sun's clones split a single-target combo across three bodies; Hilda just runs him down before his hat matters. MLCounter's matchup table (older dataset — direction, not gospel) prices the assassin school: Harley wins just 41% vs Hayabusa (241 games), 43% vs Aamon (300), 44% vs Saber (298), 47% vs Jawhead (357). - Camp the hat. The hat is visible, and the return is a recast — walking onto it does nothing (MLBBHub). Lockdown held for the return kills him mid-trick: MLCounter's rule is CC him to prevent the return; Minsitthar's ultimate blocks the return dash entirely while leaving the outbound blink legal (MLBBHub) — dive a Minsitthar whose ult is up and you're a mage in melee, permanently. - Shed or survive the ring. Untargetability wastes the 4 seconds — Hayabusa's ultimate, Lancelot's and Ling's untargetable frames, Lunox's light form (VCGamers' counter guide). Failing that, buy the window out: Athena's Shield, Radiant Armor, Oracle, Winter Crown (MLCounter) — the explosion is 50% of damage *taken*, so damage never taken never detonates. - Starve him. Steal the Blue buff (MLCounter): post-2.1.88 his cycle is mana-hungry, and a Harley choosing between combo and exit is already beaten. Grouping taxes him too — one ring, one target.
Who he counters is the mirror image: one-body backlines with no shed and no dash. MLCounter has him beating Layla 58% (274 games), Gatotkaca 57% (232), Johnson 55% (125), Alice 54% (253), Nana 52% (245) — immobile heroes eat the full four seconds and the full receipt.
Mistakes everyone makes
- "The Dash-In Opener": Opening with Space Escape instead of the ultimate. You've announced yourself, the peel reacts, and your exit is now your entrance (MLBBHub's first-named mistake).
- "The Tank Ring": Ulting the frontliner because he's close. The explosion pays 50% of damage *taken* — a tank's pool is too big to dent, and the receipt comes back laughable (MLBBHub).
- "The Early Blink-Back": Recasting the hat return at two or three seconds because the fight "looks messy." You've left the ring at its floor value AND paid the post-2.1.88 mana for the exit. Hub's rule: return when the timer shows under one second — and if you die inside the window, your damage still counts toward the explosion.
- "The Camped Hat": Returning without looking. The enemy can see the hat; if they've collapsed on it, the recast is a teleport into their damage (MLBBHub's note). A lost hat is a long walk. A camped hat is a death.
- "The Poke-Mage Delusion": Throwing cards from fifteen metres and never autoing. Magic Master's shred and attack-speed ramp *are* the damage profile — a Harley who doesn't hold basic-attack range during the ring is, in Hub's words, playing a worse Vale.
FAQ
- Is the passive called Master of Magic or Magic Master? Magic Master (Fandom). It makes his basic attacks deal 60 (+50% Total PA)(+60% Total MP) Magic Damage and shreds 2 Magic Defense per hit, up to 10 stacks.
- What did Patch 2.2.16 change for Harley? Nothing in ranked — verified-list absence plus blooing's full roundup read end to end; he appears only in the Brawl-mode buffed column. His last documented ranked change is the 2.1.88 nerf (Space Escape mana cost and cooldown up — VCGamers recap; MLBBHub).
- Can Deadly Magic be blocked or dodged? Fandom says another hero can body-block the ring; MLBBHub claims that ended in 2.1.30 — [UNCONFIRMED] either way beyond the two texts. Untargetability (Hayabusa's ult, Ling's ult, Lunox's light form) sheds it reliably (VCGamers).
- Jungle or mid? Jungle, on every current desk. Mid Harley with Flameshot exists (Zathong) but Hub calls it the worse version — you trade Retribution secures for one execute spell.
- When does he fall off? Late. Single-target burst into five magic-defense items stops deleting, and the ring's receipt shrinks as pools grow. His game is the nine-minute spike: end on it.
Final verdict
Harley in Season 42 is a delete button with a paper trail: 47.6–47.9% win rates on the live desks, a Trap Pick warning from MLBB.io, and an S-letter from Pocket Gamer that rates the trick instead of the season. Both are telling a truth. The kit — shred-stacking magic autos, a ring that bills you twice, a hat that leaves through walls — is genuinely unfair into the right draft: two squishies, one frontliner, no silence, no grounding. Into the wrong one he's a child in melee range of five adults, waiting four seconds for a hat. Draft him as an answer, never as a habit.
Play him if: the enemy stacks two high-impact squishies behind one frontliner (the Layla-plus-mid-mage draft is the textbook case), your team has its own initiation, and you'll play the ring window in auto range instead of admiring it from fifteen metres.
Skip him if: the enemy shows three or more of Helcurt, Khufra, Minsitthar, Saber, Natalia, Franco or Chou, or your team can't keep you alive to reach the same target twice. Take a real mage and poke like a coward. Harley doesn't poke. He *collects*.
