Level Devil

Unept · cover via Poki · Image source

Level Devil is the gaming equivalent of that friend who says "trust me" while holding a whoopee cushion behind their back. It presents itself as the simplest thing in the world: a little platformer where you run to the exit door. Then the floor collapses under you. Then the spikes slide sideways. Then your controls flip mid-jump and you die staring at a door that — and I cannot stress this enough — might itself be a trap. Nearly 200 levels across three worlds, and every single one is trying to outsmart you personally. The genius is that the traps punish assumptions, not reflexes. You don't die because you're slow; you die because you trusted a floor, and floors in this game are liars. That makes every death feel fair enough to laugh at, and retries are instant, so the loop becomes: die, cackle, try again, die funnier. Unept has built the rare rage game where the rage is the feature, not a bug. There's even a 2-player versus mode for racing a friend through the same traps — the fastest way I know to end a friendship over a collapsing platform. And if a level truly breaks you, fail it enough times and a skip option appears. No shame in it. The devil respects a tactical retreat.

The good stuff

Trap design that punishes assumptions, not reflexes — deaths feel fair, retries are instant. Nearly 200 levels across three worlds: a deep, deep well of betrayal. A 2-player versus mode — race a friend through the same traps and find out who you really are. The mercy skip: fail a level enough times and the game offers you a way out. Take it with pride.

Your first few moves

  1. Test every platform before committing — sprinting is how you die.
  2. If the skip option appears after several failures, take it. The game won't judge you, and neither will I.
  3. Watch the exit door. Yes, the door. Especially the door.

Before you jump in

Single-player first, with an optional local 2-player versus mode for racing a friend. It will make you yell — that's the entire point. Poki's published rating is 4.41/5 from over 4.2 million ratings, so the suffering is widely shared.

This one’s for you if…

For players who like their platformers mean, funny, and utterly impossible to put down at 2am.

Questions before you play

Is Level Devil actually hard?

It's mean by design — but the traps punish assumptions, not reflexes, so every death teaches you something. And if a level truly beats you, a skip option appears after several failures.

Can I play against a friend?

Yes — the local 2-player versus mode lets you race a friend through the same traps. Bring your own trash talk.

How many levels are there?

Nearly 200 across three worlds. That's an awful lot of lying floors.
