You know what's rude? A game so good it makes you set timers. That's Archero. This is the one that ate everyone's 2019 — Habby's little one-thumb roguelike where the entire control scheme is: drag to move, let go to shoot. That's it. That's the whole tutorial. Then it puts you in a room full of things trying to kill you, and suddenly that one thumb is doing the most stressful work of its life. The loop is disgustingly good. Clear a room, level up, pick one of three random abilities — Ricochet, Multishot, the legendary Bounce combo that turns you into a one-man fireworks show — and keep climbing. Fifty rooms a chapter, a boss every ten, and gear that makes your arrows do increasingly illegal things. When you finally beat a chapter that's been kicking your teeth in for a month, it feels like beating a Souls boss. Players say that. They're right. Now the part where I keep it real: Archero does not want you to play Archero. Five energy per run, roughly ten minutes to recharge each — the math is designed to make you put the phone down or open your wallet. The game is free, the monetization is enthusiastic: ads for revives, gems for gear, the full casino. You can absolutely enjoy it free — 4.3 stars across 1.7 million ratings don't lie — but know what you're walking into. Still: the core loop is some of the best on mobile, timer and all. Just don't blame me when you're staring at an energy counter at 1am.

The good stuff

The one-thumb control scheme is perfect — drag to move, release to shoot. No buttons, no clutter, just you and your dodging. Random ability drafts every level — Ricochet, Multishot, Bounce — turn every run into a different build experiment. Fifty rooms per chapter with a boss every ten — beating a wall chapter genuinely feels like downing a Souls boss. Runs take minutes and fit anywhere — queues, buses, and bad decisions at 2am.

Your first few moves

  1. Stop moving to shoot — your archer only fires when you let go. Stutter-step: move, pause, move, pause.
  2. Prioritize Ricochet and Multishot early — more projectiles solve more problems than more damage.
  3. Learn the boss patterns instead of out-statting them — most walls break with dodging, not grinding.

Before you jump in

Energy system: 5 energy per run, about 10 minutes to recharge each. You'll hit a point where the game asks you to wait or pay — that's the business model. Free players can still go far; just expect the pace to slow down in later chapters. Also it's a big download (over 2GB), so use Wi-Fi.

This one’s for you if…

Roguelike fans, anyone who wants a real game in five-minute bursts, dodge-skill enjoyers. Not for you if energy timers make you see red.

Questions before you play

Question: Who made Archero?

Answer: Habby (HABBY PTE. LTD.), the studio behind Survivor.io and Capybara Go. It launched in April 2019 and passed 50 million installs on Google Play.

Question: Is Archero free?

Answer: Yes, free on Android and iOS with ads and in-app purchases. The energy system limits how much you can play without waiting or paying.

Question: How do the controls work?

Answer: Your archer auto-fires only when you are standing still. Drag to move and dodge, let go to shoot. Mastering that move-stop rhythm is the whole game.
