Yu Zhong MLBB Guide: Count to Five and the Fight Is Yours (Season 42)
Yu Zhong got zero changes in 2.2.16 and the trackers can't decide if he's B or C tier — but count his Sha stacks to five and he still walks out of 1v3s with more health than he brought in.
It is 1:40 in the morning, I am on a sliver of health, and three of them have collapsed on me under my own tier-two turret. My support is already typing "gg". I do the only sane thing available to me: I press the dragon button. Half a second later a forty-foot lizard is doing doughnuts through their backline, I walk out of the wreckage with MORE health than I went in with, and my support deletes the "gg" mid-sentence. That, mate, is Yu Zhong. He doesn't win fights. He embezzles them.
If you've ever lost a 1v1 you were mathematically winning and whispered "that's illegal" at your screen — congratulations, you've met the Black Dragon. He's been ruining people's evenings since June 2020 and has not filed a single apology.
Why he's feared (and loved)
Yu Zhong is the only fighter whose game plan can be summarised as "hit me harder, I dare you." His whole identity is a loop: you trade with him, he stacks little purple marks on you, the marks detonate, and he heals a chunk of his missing health while chunking yours based on how much you've already lost. The longer the fight goes, the better his maths gets and the worse yours does — every opponent has been up 40% HP in a trade against him and lost it anyway.
Then there's the theatre. Black Dragon Form is part engage tool, part jump scare: a dragon screaming out of the fog does things to team morale no damage number can measure. And he's genuinely fun — Fandom rates him hard difficulty, and r/MobileLegendsGame posters keep naming him among the most mechanically satisfying heroes in the game. People pick him for joy and keep picking him for wins.
Season 42 viability: the honest read
Let's do the paperwork first, because this is where most guides lie to you.
Patch 2.2.16 (released 16 September 2026): I read the full Fandom patch notes. The adjustment list covers Masha and Bruno (both revamped for the 10th anniversary), Aulus, Argus, Aldous, Lukas, Odette, Sun, Marcel, Kalea, Kadita, Hylos, Cici, Melissa, Miya, Hanabi, Yi Sun-shin, Alpha, Kagura, Edith, Karina, Paquito and Kaja. Yu Zhong is not on it. Verified: no Yu Zhong changes in 2.2.16.
Patch 2.2.16a (14 October 2026): There is no Fandom page for this patch at all as of 20 October. MLBBHub's 2.2.16a highlights list nerfs to Aulus, Hirara, Eudora and Rafaela plus a buff to Kalea — no Yu Zhong. So if anyone tells you he was "secretly buffed in 2.2.16a": [UNCONFIRMED] — it cannot be verified from any source I could find.
The patch-history footnote: Fandom's Yu Zhong patch-history subpage shows one recent buff batch — 30% bonus movement speed when Sha Residue erupts, Dragon Tail cooldown cut from 7–5.5s to 6–4.5s, its spell vamp on minions raised from 50% to 100%, and a range buff to Soul Grip's enhanced basic attack. The catch: the page doesn't label which patch it shipped in, and the current hero page already reflects these numbers. Treat it as real-but-undated: [UNCONFIRMED] as a Season 42 change; verified as his current live values.
The trackers, dated: - MLBBHub (updated 27 Sep 2026, Patch 2.2.16a ranked): Tier C, 49.01% win rate, 0.54% pick rate, 0.72% ban rate. - MythicLab (fetched 20 Oct 2026, 7-day official data, Mythic and above): Tier C, 48.99% win rate, flagged "strong for tier". - MLBB.GG (updated 19 Oct 2026, Mythic 3-day window): Tier B on their SS-to-D scale. - MLBBGuides (dataset updated 29 Sep 2026): B tier, 49.50% win rate, 0.68% pick rate. - MLCounters (updated 20 Oct 2026): 49.01% win rate, meta score 29.48, ranked #77 of 133.
So they disagree: two say C, two say B, all within a point of 49%. That's a shrug, not a contradiction — barely picked, barely banned, hovering just under the 50% line. He's a niche comfort pick, not a meta slave.
Sentiment check: r/MobileLegendsGame is warm on him without being delusional: a roam player switching to EXP called him "pretty fun" while admitting they had no idea when to rotate (relatable); a 75-comment Martis thread grouped him with Dyrroth, Alice, Ruby and Thamuz as the sustain monsters Martis can't crack; and the memes flow freely, because watching a dragon delete a team never gets old. On YouTube, Dhatz Tv runs a whole Season 42 series on him (build, rotation, "passive abuse"), Rickfil ML's full guide sits at 114K views on the HP-regen angle, KAZUKI sells the MPL pro angle, and a tank-build-vs-damage-build debate short has 716K views. Players love the sustain fantasy — and argue endlessly about how to build it.
My tier verdict: high C, knocking on B's door. The data says 49%. But Yu Zhong is a specialist's hero — in practised hands he's a menace; in autofill hands he's a very expensive ward. Draft him as a counter/sustain pick, not a blind first-pick.
The full kit: what every button does
- Passive — Cursing Touch: Every time you deal physical damage to an enemy hero, you apply a stack of Sha Residue (max 5). At 5 stacks it erupts: each stack deals 20 (+20% of your Extra Physical Attack) (+2.5% of the target's lost HP), and each consumed stack restores 6% of YOUR lost HP. Eruption also grants bonus movement speed for 3 seconds (30% per the latest documented buff). *Practical note: this is your entire economy. Five stacks is a pay cheque — fight in bursts that guarantee eruptions, not endless slap-fights that let stacks fall off.*
- Skill 1 — Dragon Tail: Spin your bladed cloak for 220/280/340/400 (+100% Extra Physical Attack) around you. The sharpened edge deals 275% damage and applies 2 stacks of Sha Residue instantly. Cooldown: 6/5.5/5/4.5s. *Practical note: the edge is the whole skill. Whiff it and you've spent 6 seconds applying zero stacks — aim it like a skillshot, not an aura.*
- Skill 2 — Soul Grip: Blast the Dragon Soul forward for 150/200/250/300 (+120% Extra Physical Attack), slowing enemies 60% for 1 second. Hitting someone empowers your next basic attack for 5 seconds: 108/144/180/216 (+100% Total Physical Attack), striking twice, hitting enemies behind your target, at 4.2 range — against multiple targets it can stack Sha Residue several times over. Cooldown: 14/13/12/11s. *Practical note: your execute button disguised as poke. Land it, then walk up and cash the empowered auto.*
- Skill 3 — Furious Dive: Leap to an area dealing 180/210/240/270 (+90% Extra Physical Attack), then gain a bonus dash in your movement direction. After a short delay, enemies in the zone are knocked airborne for 0.8 seconds and eat another 180/210/240/270 (+90% Extra Physical Attack). Cooldown: 14/13/12/11s. *Practical note: the delay is the mind game — dive slightly behind where they're standing, not on top of them.*
- Ultimate — Black Dragon Form: After a 0.6s channel, become the dragon for up to 7 seconds: charge forward knocking enemies back for 180/245/310 (+80% Total Physical Attack), gain 1000/1500/2000 (+200% Extra Physical Attack) bonus max HP, become immune to control effects, and ignore terrain. When it ends you drop into Dragonoid Form with increased range on all skills. Cooldown: 85/75/65s. *Practical note: the HP gain is a second health bar — pop it at 40% HP, not 5%.*
Skill priority: Ultimate whenever available, then max Dragon Tail first (stack engine and waveclear), Soul Grip second, Furious Dive last. Start with Dragon Tail at level 1.
Combos
- "The Standard Issue" (lane kill): Furious Dive → auto → Soul Grip → empowered auto → Dragon Tail (edge). Dive closes, Grip slows and empowers, Tail cashes the stacks.
- "Dragon Delivery" (teamfight): Black Dragon Form into the backline, knock them sideways, drop into Dragonoid Form, then Soul Grip → Furious Dive → Dragon Tail → empowered auto. MLBBHub's recommended sequence — every skill lands at juiced-up Dragonoid range.
- "The Landlord" (poke and evict): Dragon Tail edge (2 free stacks) → Soul Grip → empowered auto → walk away. Repeat until the eruption does your all-in for you.
- "The Great Escape" (disengage): Black Dragon Form AWAY from the fight — yes, away — then re-enter in Dragonoid Form once cooldowns reset. Dragons are allowed to be tactical.
Rotation and map control
Your job: "win lane, become a problem." Levels 1–3, play for Dragon Tail edges and safe Sha stacks; don't coin-flip an all-in before level 4 unless the enemy laner has already donated their HP bar. At 4 you spike harder than most EXP laners — crash the wave and hover the turtle.
Black Dragon Form is a rotation tool disguised as an ultimate: shove your wave, vanish into fog, dragon across the map to the turtle or a mid skirmish, ruin someone's day, and be back before your laner finishes typing. The 0.6s channel means you can't panic-press it mid-CC — if you see the gank coming, dragon BEFORE the stun lands. In fights, enter from the side or behind: a dragon running straight at five people gets kited; a dragon appearing next to the marksman gets a kill. And respect the 85-second rank-1 cooldown — no ult, no heroics.
Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)
The community has genuinely converged — MLBBHub's "EXP Sustain Default" and MLBBGuides list the identical six-slot path:
- Tough Boots — you live in melee range; the magic defence and tenacity are non-negotiable.
- War Axe — +35 physical attack, +400 HP, 10% cooldown reduction, 8% hybrid lifesteal. Your passive loves every stat here.
- Oracle — +850 HP, 20/20 defences, 10% CDR, and it amplifies all the healing your passive prints.
- Queen's Wings — +750 HP, +30 adaptive attack, 10% CDR, 10% spell vamp. The sustain curve goes vertical here.
- Hunter Strike — +80 physical attack, 10% CDR. The movement-speed burst on takedowns keeps the dragon rolling.
- Immortality — the second life your kit thematically promised all along.
Flex items: Dominance Ice when the enemy runs their own sustain monsters (or you're the frontline and need the anti-heal aura); Brute Force Breastplate against heavy physical burst; Malefic Roar late if enemy tanks stack armour.
Emblem: Fighter emblem. Tier 1 Thrill (adaptive attack), tier 2 Festival of Blood (spell vamp synergy with your passive). The tier-3 slot is the one real argument: MythicLab's data says War Cry is the most-used tier-3 on Yu Zhong in EXP lane (it rewards his all-in pattern), while sustain-first players lean into the Festival of Blood route. Take War Cry as the diver; take sustain as the unkillable landlord. MLBBGuides also notes Custom Assassin as a spicy burst-leaning alternative — fun, but it gives up the sustain identity that makes him him.
Battle spell — the disagreement: MLBBHub's curated build runs Petrify (guarantee the full combo and eruption). MLBBGuides calls Flicker the best overall choice (reposition the Dragon Tail edge, escape, chase). I'm with Flicker in most drafts — the combo is already sticky, and Flicker fixes his one real weakness: getting kited before stacks land. Petrify when the enemy comp is slippery and you need the guaranteed lock.
How to counter him
The trackers agree on the headline and bicker about the rest: Masha is the #1 answer on both MLBBHub (weak-against +2.6) and MLCounters (-2.44). After that they diverge — MLBBHub names Wanwan and Claude, MLCounters names Lunox and Cici (with Karrie close behind). The through-line: heroes who refuse to stand still and trade. Masha out-sustains the sustain king, Wanwan and Claude kite him into irrelevance, Lunox melts percentage HP through his healing, and Cici bullies him in lane.
Itemisation: anti-heal is the whole exam, and it's one question. Dominance Ice on tanks and roamers (the aura cuts shields and regen, no aim required), Sea Halberd on marksmen and physical fighters, Glowing Wand on mages. One anti-heal item per team minimum; two if he's fed.
Play patterns: never take the extended trade — his maths improves every second the fight continues. Poke, disengage at 3–4 Sha stacks, re-engage after they fall off. Punish the 0.6s dragon channel with CC if you can. And when he ults, scatter sideways, not backwards — the charge is a line, and dragons are terrible at turning.
Mistakes everyone makes
- "The Ult Button Is Not a Personality": Dragon-forming straight into five enemies with no follow-up is an expensive way to feed. No team nearby? No dragon.
- "Fighting at Four Stacks": Disengaging at 4 stacks is doing 80% of the work for 0% of the pay. Count to five. Collect the cheque.
- "Dragon Tail from Narnia": Spinning the cloak at max range and clipping nobody with the edge. The edge applies 2 stacks; the middle applies vibes. Walk up. Aim it.
- "Furious Dive, Furious Die": Diving in with both movement tools spent and the ult on cooldown, then discovering the enemy jungler was waiting. Always keep one exit.
- "Building Like It's 2024": Full damage feels amazing for exactly one fight, right before one Dominance Ice makes you evaporate. The War Axe → Oracle → Queen's Wings sustain curve exists for a reason.
FAQ
- Is Yu Zhong meta in Season 42? Fringe-meta. Trackers place him at Tier C (MLBBHub, MythicLab) to Tier B (MLBB.GG, MLBBGuides), ~49% win rate, under 1% pick/ban. He's a pocket pick — which also means nobody bans him and nobody practises against him. Exploit that.
- Petrify or Flicker? Split community: MLBBHub's build takes Petrify, MLBBGuides recommends Flicker overall. Flicker for most games; Petrify when you need a guaranteed combo lock.
- What do I max first? Dragon Tail, then Soul Grip, then Furious Dive, ultimate whenever it lights up.
- Who counters him hardest? Masha, per every tracker. Then Wanwan, Claude (MLBBHub) or Lunox, Cici, Karrie (MLCounters) — all refuse the long trade he wants. And buy anti-heal. Always.
- Tank build or damage build? The 716K-view YouTube debate has a boring correct answer: the sustain-bruiser middle (War Axe → Oracle → Queen's Wings). Full tank tickles; full damage dies.
- Is he hard to learn? Fandom rates him hard — a fun hard, not a Fanny hard. Stack-counting, edge-aiming, dragon timing. Around game fifteen the passive starts feeling like a second heartbeat.
Final verdict
Yu Zhong in Season 42 is the best hero nobody is playing — 49% win rate, 0.54% pick rate, ranked #77, and absolutely capable of 1v3ing your ranked game while your support types "gg" prematurely. The trackers can't decide between B and C, the patch notes left him completely alone in 2.2.16, and the one documented buff batch on Fandom can't be pinned to a patch with confidence. What IS certain is the kit: a sustain engine with real maths behind it, a dragon form that breaks teamfights and morale simultaneously, and a skill ceiling that keeps you entertained for hundreds of games.
Play him if: you enjoy winning fights you should lose, you can count to five under pressure, and you want an EXP laner who scales on game sense rather than patch favour.
Skip him if: you want a brain-off meta slave, you tilt when your all-in gets kited, or your idea of a rotation is "walk at the enemy and hope." The dragon doesn't suffer fools — but oh, does he reward the faithful.
