Ruby MLBB Guide: The Hook That Heals (Season 42)
Ruby skipped Season 42's patch notes entirely and still sits near 50% win rate — the scythe girl who hooks your whole team and heals through the crime. Flicker-hook combos, builds, counters.
Lord pit, minute thirteen, and their whole team is standing in the one bush every ranked player checks too late. I'm playing the little girl in the red hood. I walk in like I own the forest — because in this story, I do — swing the scythe, and I'm Offended! collects four of them: the jungler, both carries, and a roamer just watching. Then I Flicker mid-swing and deliver the whole bundle into my team. Four heroes, gift-wrapped, stunned, in a pile. My marksman didn't even have to aim.
That is Ruby. She rearranges the enemy team into a shape her team can delete, then heals herself by spinning in the wreckage. A kit of pure crowd control wearing a fairy tale as a disguise — and Season 42 never touched her, which is exactly why she still works.
Why she's feared (and loved)
Every skill she owns moves somebody. Not damages — moves. Be Good! slows you, Don't Run, Wolf King! stuns you twice while dragging you closer, and the ult re-seats your whole formation somewhere worse. Playing against Ruby feels like the floor has opinions. Playing AS Ruby feels like being the floor.
Then there's the healing, the part people genuinely hate. Her skills run on spell vamp at a boosted ratio, her passive hands her a dash and stacking defenses after every cast, and since Season 41's rework her sustain leans harder the lower her health gets. The correct play against a half-HP Ruby is to finish her — except that means standing in the scythe blender while she spins, stuns, pulls and drinks your team's damage. Half the time you don't kill her. You refill her.
Season 42 viability: the honest read
Patch 2.2.16 (16 September 2026): Ruby is not on the adjustment list — verified independently: the patch is the Masha and Bruno revamps plus 22 adjustments (Aulus, Argus, Aldous, Lukas, Odette, Sun, Marcel, Kalea, Kadita, Hylos, Cici, Melissa, Miya, Hanabi, Yi Sun-shin, Alpha, Kagura, Edith, Karina, Paquito, Kaja; Liquipedia's summary matches). Her last changes came in Season 41 — patch 2.1.88 put her on its buff list (VCGamers' recap), raising her damage and rebalancing her sustain to ramp as her HP drops instead of paying out most at full health (MLBBHub's patch editorial).
Patch 2.2.16a (14 October 2026): Documented changes: nerfs to Aulus, Hirara, Eudora and Rafaela, plus a Kalea buff — no Ruby. No Fandom patch page for 2.2.16a exists, so "Ruby got quietly changed in 2.2.16a" claims are [UNCONFIRMED].
The trackers, dated (community snapshots, not Moonton figures): - MLBBHub (checked 20 Oct 2026, refreshed daily): 49.5% win rate, 0.3% pick, 0.3% ban. - MLCounters (updated 20 Oct 2026): 49.32% win rate, #113 overall, meta score 26.40. - MLBBDex (tier list updated 19 Oct 2026, patch 2.2.16): Tier B, 49.5% win rate in EXP. - EliteDias (15 Oct 2026): Tier C among Fighters, 49.3%. Pocket Gamer (Oct 2026): A among Fighters — the editorial optimist. Ignore MLCounter.com's A badge; its Ruby page is months stale.
One honesty footnote: mlbb.tools (Oct 2026) describes her spell-vamp ratio ramping as her HP drops, matching MLBBHub's post-2.1.88 account; Fandom's page still prints the flat 125% wording. Kit below uses Fandom's text.
Sentiment: Fresh r/MobileLegendsGame Ruby threads basically don't surface this season — she's nobody's current argument, which for a control pick is half the appeal. The standing community view (ONE Esports' framing): a solid, honest EXP/roam pick who trades damage for "troublesome" low-cooldown control and tremendous sustain in long fights. Nobody fears her in draft. Everybody respects the one-trick in the game.
My tier verdict: B−. The chorus says 49.3–49.5% and mostly C-tier; into a poke-and-disengage draft she earns every decimal. Into melee-heavy teams that must walk into her, she plays a full tier above her numbers — and drafts like that are most of ranked.
The full kit: what every button does
All figures from the MLBB Fandom hero page (checked 20 Oct 2026).
- Passive — Let's Dance!: Ruby gains 6%–20% Spell Vamp (scaling with level) and her skills inherit a 125% Spell Vamp Ratio — skill-damage healing, amplified. Crucially, her Basic Attacks cannot trigger Lifesteal: auto-attacking a wave heals you nothing. After each skill cast she can dash and gains 7.5 (+1.5 × hero level) Physical & Magic Defense for 4 seconds, stacking up to 3 times (Fandom's table tops out at 108 bonus defense at level 15). *Practical note: the dash is the kit. Cast, slide sideways, cast again — a stationary Ruby has her passive off. Backward dashes are shorter; root disables it.*
- Skill 1 — Be Good!: Slash for 90 (+70%–130% Total Physical Attack, scaling with skill level), then a shockwave the same way for another 90 (+70%–130%), slowing enemies hit by 40% for 1 second. Cooldown 4.0 seconds, mana 25. *Practical note: waveclear, poke and sustain in one 4-second loop — clip wave and laner with the same cast. Level 1 take, first max.*
- Skill 2 — Don't Run, Wolf King!: Two scythe spins around herself; each deals 60–185 (+55% Total Physical Attack), stuns for 0.5 seconds, and slowly pulls enemies toward her. Cooldown 7.0 seconds, mana 50–75. *Practical note: your trade reset and interrupt — two separate stuns break channels and combos. Hold it until the enemy commits a step; never poke with it.*
- Ultimate — I'm Offended!: A scythe sweep in the target direction for 200–480 (+200% Total Physical Attack), pulling every enemy hit toward her and stunning them for 0.5 seconds. Cooldown 26/23/20 seconds, mana 80–120. *Practical note: it pulls toward Ruby, so the direction you face is the whole play — across your team, into a turret, against a wall, never deeper into theirs.*
Skill priority: Ultimate whenever offered, Be Good! maxed first (shortest cooldown = most spell-vamp cycles, plus your waveclear), Don't Run, Wolf King! second.
Combos
- "The Lane Tax" (standard trade): Be Good! to clip the wave and the laner → passive dash sideways → Don't Run, Wolf King! when they step back in → dash out. Stuns, slow, full heal cycle, gone.
- "The Delivery" (Flicker-hook): Cast I'm Offended! from a bush or fog, then Flicker forward during the swing — the pull anchors to your new position and the catch teleports into your team (or under your turret). MLBBHub's tip: drag sideways into your lineup, not straight back into yourself.
- "The Full Blender" (teamfight chain): Be Good! slow first so they show their escape direction → Don't Run, Wolf King! double stun and gather → I'm Offended! to re-pile whoever's left → keep spinning on cooldown. Every cast is also a dash — reposition between stuns.
- "The Bodyguard" (peel): Save the ultimate. When their diver lands on your carry, Don't Run, Wolf King! to stun them off, then I'm Offended! to remove them from the postcode. Ruby plays goalie and goal-scorer in the same draft.
Rotation and map control
Ruby's lane is a negotiation she wins by patience. Early, your job is the wave: Be Good! every 4 seconds keeps it moving on your terms, and her sustain means most EXP laners can't trade her out without help. Freeze near your turret if your jungler paths your side; take short trades, never the long chase — no gap-close beyond the passive dash, and walking after people is how Ruby players donate kills.
From level 4 she's an objective player. Crash your wave, then hover Turtle: a Ruby in the river bush with her ultimate up owns that fight, because the enemy must group on the pit and grouping is her love language. After War Axe and Queen's Wings (minutes 8–10), hunt the second engage — let your tank force the first cooldown wave, then enter and pull what's left. Late game she's a fog hero: hold bushes near Lord, punish face-checks with the Flicker-hook, never show alone with her ult down. No ult, no menace — farm a side wave instead of inventing a fight.
Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)
The tracked consensus (MLBBHub, cross-checked with Fandom's community guide and LootBar) is a sustain-bruiser skeleton:
- Boots: Tough Boots by default — CC reduction and magic defense for a hero who stands inside fights. Warrior Boots vs physical poke lanes. - War Axe — the non-negotiable first item: HP, cooldown reduction, spell vamp and a stacking damage passive that rewards staying in contact. Ruby doesn't burst; she keeps touching the fight, and War Axe makes it hurt. (LootBar's tracked EXP core adds Endless Battle to this skeleton for damage and hybrid lifesteal.) - Queen's Wings — the second half of her spike. Demonize triggers under 40% HP (30% damage reduction, cooldowns refunded), exactly when her low-HP sustain ramp peaks. The War Axe + Queen's Wings window lands at 8–10 minutes (Hub): before it she's hard to kill, after it she's hard to play into. - Oracle — the classic third sustain piece (Fandom's recommended build: Tough Boots, War Axe, Queen's Wings, Oracle): amplified healing, defenses, CDR. MLBBHub's caveat: players buy it too casually — it's a sustain multiplier, not armour against what's actually killing you. - Flex slots, with reasons: - Dominance Ice — enemy sustains or shields and nobody else covers anti-heal; on tank/roam it's your second item, not a flex. - Haas's Claws — the old-school lifesteal axis (Zathong's sustain builds still open with it): max heal-per-swing for duel-heavy games, at the cost of CDR. - Brute Force Breastplate — vs mobile comps: movement speed and control-duration reduction to stay glued to target two. - Athena's Shield / Blade Armor — burst mages who end your engage early / crit marksmen who shoot the front line first. (That's you. You're the front line.) - Immortality — when one late Lord fight decides everything; make their carry answer twice. - Tank/roam split: Roaming Ruby skips the damage order: Tough Boots → Dominance Ice → defensive flex (Athena's, Antique Cuirass, Queen's Wings late); pure engage-and-peel.
Emblem: Fighter — Firmness, Festival of Blood, Brave Smite (MLBBHub and 1v9 run the identical setup). Festival of Blood is the synergy pick: takedowns stack spell vamp onto a hero whose kit converts skill damage into health; Brave Smite pays max-HP healing for her constant skill spam. Roam Ruby can run Tank (Tenacity/Concussive Blast, per Fandom's guide) as a pure frontline. Old Assassin emblem builds are pre-rework legacy; current sources have dropped them.
Battle spell: Flicker, and it isn't close — the hook-extender, the escape her kit lacks, a pro-play staple for her ultimate (MLBBHub, Fandom's guide and LootBar all default to it). Vengeance is the real alternative into all-burst drafts: absorb the opening, heal through it.
How to counter her
The counterplay starts in the shop, and both tracked sources agree on the exam answer: anti-heal. MLCounters lists Dominance Ice, Sea Halberd and Glowing Wand as the three best items into her — one per damage profile, no excuses. Healing reduction taxes her whole kit — her durability IS her healing.
Hero counters (two trackers minimum): MLBBHub's measured data names X.Borg, Phoveus and Gord; MLCounters' top three are X.Borg, Phoveus and Beatrix. X.Borg is the consensus nightmare — true damage ignores her stacked defenses. Phoveus is the structural one: her passive dash after every skill is literally his ultimate's trigger condition, so her mobility becomes his battery. Valir gets every source's dishonourable mention — knockback plus a self-cleanse ultimate means she can't start on him while it's up; bait it first. Baxia (built-in anti-heal) and Kaja (suppression stops the dance) round out the draft warnings.
Play patterns: Never fight her inside a minion wave — her AoE spell vamp drinks the whole wave, so pull the fight into the river where she has one target, not six. Burst her in the cooldown gaps: after Don't Run, Wolf King! and the ult are spent she has one Be Good! and her dignity. Poke from outside scythe range, chain CC so she can't chain casts (root also disables her dash), and don't clump — a grouped team is a delivery she's about to sign for.
Mistakes everyone makes
- "Auto-Attack Andy": Standing still trading basic attacks like a normal bruiser — hers trigger zero lifesteal. Not casting and dashing means playing a worse hero on purpose.
- "Flicker-Ult as a First Instinct": Opening every fight with the hook combo because it exists. MLBBHub says it plainly: highlight behaviour, not winning behaviour. She's usually the second touch.
- "Wasting the Wolf King": Throwing Don't Run, Wolf King! as poke. It's her most important cooldown — it decides who owns the distance after contact.
- "The Long Trade into Anti-Heal": Trying to out-sustain Baxia or a stacked Dominance Ice aura. Take one clean control trade, dash out, re-enter next cycle. Pride is not a stat.
- "Dashing on Autopilot into Phoveus": Every passive slide feeds his ultimate. Against him, cast and hold the angle — dash only when it changes the trade.
- "Rotating on a Crashing Wave": Leaving for Turtle while a stacked wave eats your turret. Clear first, move second.
FAQ
- EXP lane or roam? EXP is home — all tracker data is EXP data. Roam works when the draft already has damage and needs a second engager: tank build, Tank emblem, accept you're a hook with a health bar.
- Flicker or Vengeance? Flicker by default — hook plays win games. Vengeance when the enemy comp is all burst and your job is surviving first contact so your second control cycle lands.
- Why can't I heal off minions with basic attacks? Her passive forbids it: basic attacks cannot trigger her lifesteal. Healing comes from SKILL damage via spell vamp — why cooldown reduction is secretly a sustain stat on her.
- Haas's Claws or War Axe first? War Axe, per the tracked consensus — HP, CDR, spell vamp, stacking damage. Haas's Claws builds survive on older guides; more heal per swing, but they starve the cooldown engine.
- Who counters her hardest? X.Borg on every list, Phoveus right behind. Then Valir's knockback, Baxia's anti-heal, Kaja's suppression — and any poke comp that refuses to clump.
- Is she good for beginners? Medium difficulty per MLBBHub. Simple buttons; the skill is spacing — when the dash goes sideways instead of forward. Her sustain makes EXP kind to learn on her.
Final verdict
Ruby in Season 42 is the honest control pick: untouched by the anniversary patch, holding 49.3–49.5% across every tracker that matters, banned by nobody, still capable of winning a Lord fight with one button and a Flicker. She will never top the damage graph. She is the reason it got to happen.
Play her if: your team has follow-up damage, the enemy draft wants to walk into you, and you enjoy rearranging fights for a living. Melee-heavy comps are her buffet.
Skip her if: your team needs YOU to be the damage, or the enemy draft is poke, knockback and disengage — Valir lanes teach patience you'd rather learn elsewhere. Ruby doesn't lose many drafts. She just refuses to win the wrong ones.
