Sony's October PS Plus Drop Is the Best Kind of Problem: Nine Games, Zero Extra Cash

Add a useful introduction to this story.

Sony just handed Extra and Premium subscribers nine games, and I want to talk about the one that matters most: the day-one release. Because those are the only moments subscription services still feel like magic.

Tomorrow, October 20, *Mycopunk* launches straight into the Game Catalog. No launch window. No 18-month embargo where the corpse of the sales chart gets shoveled into the library. A brand-new 4-player co-op looter shooter — the New Atlas Hazard Crew versus a fungal apocalypse, working for the delightfully ominous-sounding SAXON corporation — playable on release day for the price of the subscription you're already paying. This is exactly what "day one on the service" was supposed to mean, and I will not hear otherwise.

But Mycopunk isn't the headliner. That honour belongs to *Mafia: The Old Country*, Hangar 13's trip to 1900s Sicily, where you play Enzo Favara in the mob story the series finally deserved. This is a genuinely recent, big, story-driven AAA game — the kind of release that historically arrives on subscription catalogs only after the full-price crowd has moved on. It lands October 20 too. If you've been waiting for a reason to revisit the Mafia saga, the universe just made your schedule for the week.

The value play nobody should sleep on

*Horizon Forbidden West* returns to the catalog on October 20 — Sony itself calls this a "PlayStation Plus re-release," which is corporate for "yes, we took it away, yes, it's back." If you missed Aloy braving the Forbidden West the first time, or your backlog ate you alive (no judgment, mine has a body count), this is the redo. A hundred-hour open-world RPG at no extra cost is the kind of deal that makes me suspicious of nothing at all.

Premium subscribers, you get two extra toys: *Dino Crisis 2*, the PSOne dinosaur-survival classic with Regina and Dylan, and *RollerCoaster Tycoon 3: Complete Edition* for your inner theme-park tyrant. Both October 20. Dino Crisis 2 in particular is the reason Premium's classics tier keeps justifying itself — the kind of game you tell younger players about and they assume you're inventing it.

Already out, coming late

The dates are staggered, because Sony apparently enjoys making calendars complicated. *The Midnight Walk* — the clay-built dark fantasy from the minds behind *Lost in Random*, *Fe* and *Ghost Giant*, playable on PS5 and PS VR2 — has been out since October 14 (US/UK) and October 15 (Japan). That's your Halloween-season pick, by the way. It's right there. Clay. Dark fantasy. You're welcome.

The last three arrive October 27 in the US, UK and Japan: *Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2* (deeper into the toy factory, good luck), *Tales of Arise — Beyond the Dawn Edition* (Bandai Namco's JRPG, story expansion included), and *Monster Energy Supercross 25*. There's also Horrorfest sprinkles: the Back 4 Blood Tunnels of Terror DLC free for Plus members October 21 to November 4, and a World War Z Halloween skin pack October 20.

The shelf test

Look, the Game Catalog isn't new, and most of you already know the Extra/Premium rhythm. But this month is a genuinely stacked one: a fresh AAA crime drama, one of the best open-world RPGs of the generation, a day-one co-op shooter, and a retro dinosaur survival game, all in the same drop. If your subscription was up for renewal this month, consider this Sony doing the retention paperwork for you.

My recommendation for the week: start *Mafia* for the evenings, download *Mycopunk* for the friends you can guilt into co-op, and keep *The Midnight Walk* for October 31. A mob drama, a mushroom apocalypse, and a clay nightmare. Cinema.
