Phoveus MLBB Guide: The Dash Tax Collector (Season 42)
Phoveus skipped Season 42's patch notes and sits at 48.5% win rate — the blind jailer who taxes every dash near him. Mark-and-leap combos, builds, counters.
The Fanny has cabled into my lane four times in nine seconds. Four. Wall to wall to wall, the full anime opening — and every cable did her a favour she didn't order: it refunded MY cooldowns. By the fifth cable my passive is back, my slam is back, and she's standing in my Dark Wave wondering why the game's scariest escape artist suddenly can't leave. She can. She just pays the tax in health every time she tries.
That's Phoveus. Welcome in. He's the Chains of Sin, a blind ex-soldier who traded his eyes to a god of terror and now spends ranked games telling the mobility meta to sit down. Moonton revamped him in 2024 because the original barely functioned; Season 42 hasn't touched him — and in the right draft he is still the rudest answer to a dash-happy enemy team ever printed. In the wrong draft he's a man jogging at people.
Why he's feared (and loved)
Fear first: Phoveus doesn't counter dashes with a gimmick anymore — he runs an economy on them. Astaros' Gaze means every blink, dash or displacement near him refunds his cooldowns, so the harder the enemy team dances, the faster his kit cycles. His own skills stamp Sinner's Mark on people, and Infernal Pursuit — which has no cooldown worth the name — lets him leap onto marked targets, untargetable on the way down. Wanwan's ult dance, Chou's combo, Harith blinking through the fight: all of it is Phoveus fuel with better animation.
Love second: the fantasy is pure spite, and it's earned. He is a sinner the Empire tried to execute, who chained the demon to himself with the oath "our will is your eternal shackle" and walked back to defend the border that condemned him (Fandom lore). He's the pick for when assassins keep treating your backline like a buffet. He doesn't chase the meta. He waits for the meta to dash into him.
Season 42 viability: the honest read
Paperwork first — this is where guides lie to you.
Patch 2.2.16 (released 16 September 2026): Phoveus is not on the adjustment list. I searched the full Fandom patch notes — Masha and Bruno revamps, majors for Aulus, Argus, Aldous, Lukas, Odette, Sun and Marcel, plus the rest of the adjustment list — and "Phoveus" appears nowhere in it. His last documented touch was Season 41's patch 2.1.88, which trimmed his base HP, Physical Attack and Physical Defense (MLBBHub), so his early lane is more fragile than old mains remember.
Patch 2.2.16a (14 October 2026): The documented changes are a Kalea buff and nerfs to Aulus, Hirara, Eudora and Rafaela. No Phoveus — and with no official Fandom page for the sub-patch, treat any "secret Phoveus change" claim as [UNCONFIRMED].
The trackers, dated (community snapshots, not Moonton figures): - MLBBHub (refreshed daily, checked 20 Oct 2026): 48.5% WR, 0.3% pick, 0.6% ban, Medium difficulty; builds page: C tier (last 7 days). - MLCounters (updated 20 Oct 2026): 48.20% WR, 0.27% pick, 0.63% ban, #64 overall. - MLBBDex (tier list updated Oct 2026): 48.7% WR in EXP, 0.3% pick, 0.7% ban. EliteDias (15 Oct 2026, MLBBHub-sourced): D tier, 48.2%. - Pocket Gamer (Oct 2026): S+ among Fighters — the table's editorial romantic. - MLCounter.com's 51.75% "S tier" is months stale and describes the pre-revamp ult — ignore it.
So the chorus sings 48.2–48.7% and the argument is the letter. Sentiment: no fresh r/MobileLegendsGame Phoveus threads surfaced this season, so this is labelled editorial material: his image splits between pro heritage (ONE Esports, via AP Bren's FlapTzy: the bane of every mobile hero) and a lingering post-revamp shrug — a 2024 Tech4Gamers post-mortem ("How Mobile Legends Revamped Its Worst Hero And Made Him Even Worse") still colours how players talk about him. My tier verdict: C+. A 48.5% hero with an asterisk the size of a draft screen: into two or more dash-reliant enemies he's an A-tier answer (56% measured WR vs Fanny, MLBBHub); into a static poke comp he's a bruiser doing cardio. Draft-dependent is not an insult. It's the job description.
The full kit: what every button does
All mechanics from the MLBB Fandom hero page, checked 20 October 2026. He has no mana bar since the revamp — cooldowns are his only resource. Base HP 2650→5730, Physical Attack 132→240.
- Passive — Demonic Force: His next basic attack charges at the enemy, knocking them back, dealing extra Magic Damage equal to 4% of the target's Max HP, and granting Phoveus a shield equal to 8% of his own Max HP. Internal cooldown 26–14 seconds (shrinks as Infernal Pursuit levels up). Astaros' Gaze, built in: whenever an enemy hero blinks, dashes, or is displaced within 8 units of Phoveus, Demonic Force's cooldown drops by 20% and his other skills' cooldowns drop by 0.5s. *Practical note: displacement counts — even your own tank's knockback feeds him.*
- Skill 1 — Demonic Impact: Slams the monolith down: 200–500 (+120% Total Physical Attack) Physical Damage and a 70% slow for 0.5s. Cooldown 6.0s. If it hits an enemy, his next Demonic Impact leaves behind an Astaros Eye, which implodes after a short delay for 100–250 (+60% Total Physical Attack) Magic Damage. *Practical note: cast one changes cast two — the Eye is zoning enemies must walk around, and a mark source.*
- Skill 2 — Dark Wave: Releases demonic power in a line: enemies are knocked airborne and dragged along, taking 250–500 (+100% Extra Physical Attack) Magic Damage. Cooldown 10.0s. Fandom note: it can be repositioned with Flicker during the cast delay. *Practical note: your pin. Hold it until the enemy commits a dash first (MLBBHub) — whiffed from max range, it's a warning shot.*
- Ultimate — Infernal Pursuit: Passive half: Demonic Force, Astaros Eye and Dark Wave apply Sinner's Mark to enemy heroes they hit. Active half: Phoveus leaps — untargetable and control-immune while travelling — and smashes down on a marked enemy hero for 250–500 (+100% Total Physical Attack) Physical Damage plus extra Physical Damage equal to 5–10% of the target's Max HP (scales with ult level), recovering 50 + 6% of his Lost HP (heal cut by 80% if the smash hits multiple enemies). And what the internet keeps getting wrong: Fandom lists no cooldown for this skill. The mark is the cooldown. Re-mark, re-leap.
Skill priority, my way: ultimate whenever offered, Demonic Impact first (your poke, your Eye, your most reliable mark), Dark Wave second.
Combos
- "The Lane Tax" (standard trade): Demonic Force passive hit (charge in, knockback, shield up) → Demonic Impact → second Demonic Impact for the Astaros Eye → Dark Wave drag as they retreat → Infernal Pursuit onto the marked target. Every piece re-marks, so the sequence feeds itself.
- "The Fanny Toll Booth": Don't chase her. Stand where her cables end. Every cable within 8 units refunds your cooldowns via Astaros' Gaze; when she lands, Demonic Impact + Dark Wave stamp the mark and Infernal Pursuit follows her next cable free. MLBBHub's measured number for this matchup: he wins 56%.
- "The Flicker Wave": Start Dark Wave, Flicker mid-cast to reposition it (a Fandom-documented trick) — the drag lands where they fled to. Turns his most telegraphed skill into a genuine surprise.
- "The Mark Chain" (teamfights): Enter second, behind your real engage. Dark Wave through the clump marks and drags; leap to the marked diver first, passive hit, re-mark with Demonic Impact, leap again. You're not an assassin — you're a bruiser who never loses contact (MLBBHub's model).
Rotation and map control
Lane first (MLBBHub's script): make Demonic Impact clip both the wave and the enemy hero — a cast that only tags minions wastes your draft reason. Freeze against ranged lanes; crash the wave only when you can step into the river with cooldowns live. Post-2.1.88, early all-ins are thinner: shorten fights before your spike, lengthen them after.
The spike: War Axe + Queen's Wings, roughly 7:30–10:00 in a stable lane (MLBBHub). War Axe is CDR, HP and spell vamp for a hero whose trades are skill loops; Queen's Wings' Demonize reduction at low HP buys the one extra cycle — one more passive, one more slam, one more leap — that flips fights enemies misread as won.
Mid game: rotate to where the dashes are, not where the farm is. Park on the objective side, stand one beat behind your initiator, and let enemy movement come to you. If your team has no engage, hold the first contact point and farm the refunds — don't go hunting a backline that can kite you across the map (his nightmare backlines, per MLBBHub).
Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)
The spine (MLBBHub): Tough Boots → War Axe → Queen's Wings → Oracle. Oracle is the multiplier: his passive shield and ult heal both feed on it, turning "annoying" into "why is he still alive?" Warrior Boots only vs pure physical chip lanes. Athena's Shield is the burst-mage flex (revamp-era Codashop/LootBar builds ran Brute Force third instead).
Flex slots, by lobby: - Dominance Ice — vs sustain comps: Lifebane cuts nearby enemies' shield/regen to 60%. - Brute Force Breastplate — movespeed + control reduction for fights that keep moving. - Radiant Armor — vs repeated magic poke (the Aurora/Valir problem), better than one big shield. - Immortality — late, when you're the first body in and death timers decide Lord fights.
Emblem: Fighter — Firmness / Festival of Blood / Brave Smite (MLBBHub's current page). Revamp-era debate: LootBar preferred Thrill in slot one; 1v9 ran Agility, with Temporal Reign as the Brave Smite alternative. Festival of Blood is the talent nobody argues about — the whole kit triggers spell vamp.
Battle spell: split decision, and I'll referee it. MLBBHub and 1v9 say Vengeance — he's a centre-of-fight bruiser and Vengeance keeps him there (1v9: ideal in most matchups). LootBar and Codashop say Flicker — it powers the Flicker Wave trick and gives the no-escape hero an exit. My take: Vengeance into melee-heavy drafts; Flicker the moment the enemy backline can kite you. Execute is 1v9's greedy lane option — playable, defensively worthless. *Warning: half the internet still lives in 2021 — pre-revamp guides (Zathong's current page included) build Clock of Destiny and magic pen for the OLD magic-scaling kit. Revamped Phoveus scales on Physical Attack.*
How to counter him
Two trackers, one shopping list. MLBBHub's measured counters (data updated 17 Oct 2026): X.Borg (+4.2 percentage points), Alpha (+3.6), Minsitthar (+3.6), then Barats, Alice, Bane, Baxia, Terizla, Luo Yi, Gord and Vexana. MLCounters (20 Oct 2026): Alpha, X.Borg, Alice — same podium, shuffled. Why: X.Borg and Alpha out-sustain him in-lane without dashing for a living; Alice outscales him; and Minsitthar is the thematic humiliation — King's Calling grounds dash skills entirely, so the anti-dash hero gets anti-dashed. Ranged control backlines (Aurora, Valir, Vexana) beat him by shape, not stats: they reset him before he reaches melee (MLBBHub; VCGamers: Valir is the safest counter of all).
Items (MLCounter's counter page): shield-cutting first — Sea Halberd, Glowing Wand, Dominance Ice; %-HP damage (Demon Hunter Sword, Wishing Lantern) because his bulk is HP-scaled; Winter Crown to blank the leap's targeting window. Play patterns: (1) Don't dash within 8 units of him unless the dash kills him — every mobility skill refunds his passive 20% and his skills 0.5s, and knockbacks near him feed the Gaze too. (2) Let Sinner's Mark expire (MLBBHub): a mark is not an order — walk out of leap range and let it drop instead of donating a free engage. (3) Draft static: poke, disengage and long-range CC make him jog at people all game. (4) Punish the whiffed Dark Wave — 10 seconds with his only pin gone.
Mistakes everyone makes
- "Blind Phoveus": Locking him because the enemy showed ONE dash hero. MLBBHub calls this the real trap — he needs repeated movement and melee traffic, not a single Lancelot in a poke comp.
- "Leaping at the Mark": A marked target under three teammates is bait, not a button prompt. Judge the landing zone, not the mark (MLBBHub).
- "Dark Wave Opener": Spending your drag from max range to "start" a trade. It's a tax collector, not a doorbell — hold it until they commit.
- "Damage Greed": Winning one lane trade, then stacking attack items. He doesn't lose games for lack of damage; he loses them by dying before his second rotation (MLBBHub).
- "Stat-Check Ego": Brute-forcing sustain lanes (Esmeralda types) before War Axe + Queen's Wings land. Wave control and anti-heal win those lanes, not confidence.
- "The 2021 Build": Copying a pre-revamp guide — magic items, Clock of Destiny, Mage emblem. His scalings are physical now. Check the date on any Phoveus guide before copying it.
FAQ
- Is Phoveus still the anti-dash hero after the revamp? Yes, but the mechanism moved. Pre-2024 he leapt at anyone who blinked near him. Now his skills apply Sinner's Mark for the leap, and dashes near him refund his cooldowns instead (Astaros' Gaze: −20% passive CD, −0.5s other skills, 8 units, displacement counts).
- Does Infernal Pursuit really have no cooldown? Fandom's table lists none; revamp guides (Codashop) agree. The gate is the Sinner's Mark — land a mark source (passive hit, Astaros Eye, Dark Wave) and leap again.
- Vengeance or Flicker? The sources split: MLBBHub/1v9 run Vengeance for brawl durability; LootBar/Codashop run Flicker for the Flicker–Dark Wave reposition and an escape. Match the lobby.
- Who does Phoveus actually beat? Measured (both trackers agree): Wanwan, Harith and Freya are his best matchups, plus Arlott, Chou, Benedetta, Mathilda and Nolan by draft logic (MLBBHub) — heroes who must move inside his zone.
- Why is his win rate only ~48% if he hard-counters Fanny? Because he's a draft answer, not a blind pick: into static poke and ranged CC he has no fuel and no reach. The 48.5% is a scalpel used as a hammer half the time.
- Is he hard to play? Medium (MLBBHub). The buttons are simple; the skill is landing-zone discipline — knowing which marked target is money and which is a funeral.
Final verdict
Phoveus in Season 42 is a 48.5%-win-rate answer to a question the enemy draft has to ask first. Moonton ignored him this patch, the trackers file him from D tier to S+, and both camps are right about different lobbies: into dash-heavy teams he's a toll booth charging health for movement; into everyone else, a blind man with a big rock and excellent cardio. He doesn't carry drafts. He closes them.
Play him if: the enemy has two or more heroes who solve fights with movement (Wanwan, Harith, Fanny, Chou, Arlott), your team brings engage/displacement to feed his loop, and you don't press the leap button every time a mark lights up.
Skip him if: you're blind-picking early, the enemy draft is poke + disengage + ranged CC, or you need an EXP laner who wins without conditions. Phoveus into the wrong lobby isn't a counterpick that failed — it's a spectator with a monolith.
