Nolan MLBB Guide: The Second Rift Is the Kill (Season 42)

A 49.4% win rate, a 6–7% ban rate, and a combo that does nothing for one full second — then deletes you. Nolan, read honestly: the rift kit, the two-item spike, and the drafts that switch him off.

Why he's feared (and loved)

Minute nine, gold lane. The enemy Hanabi has done everything right — full HP, Flicker up, standing behind her minions. Then a violet crack opens in the air beside her. One rift. Harmless, right? Rifts don't hurt anybody. A second crack tears across the first, the two scars snap together, and the intersection *pulls* — she is dragged off her minion line into the middle of the X, and the detonation takes the argument from there. That's the Cosmic Wayfinder: an assassin whose kill doesn't start when he touches you. It starts a full second earlier, when he cuts the first hole in the map and you don't respect it.

The lore is why half the player base forgives him the other half's bans. Per his Fandom story, Nolan is a scholar of Eruditio who crossed the multiverse and scattered pieces of his own soul to trap a cosmic Calamity — all to get home to his daughter. The daughter is Layla. Yes, that Layla. His gameplay is the same energy as the sixteen years he spent falling through the Void to reach her: patient, geometric, and not finished when you think he's missed.

Season 42 viability: the honest read

Paperwork first.

Patch 2.2.16 (released 16 September 2026): Nolan has no ranked balance change. He's absent from the verified adjustment list (Masha/Bruno revamps plus 22 adjustments), and blooing's complete 2.2.16 roundup — ranked buffs, nerfs, tweaks, Classic pass, read end to end — names him exactly once: in the Brawl-mode buffed column. Mode footnote, not a ranked change. Patch 2.2.16a (14 Oct 2026): the documented list (Kalea buff; Aulus, Hirara, Eudora, Rafaela nerfs) has no Nolan; any contrary claim stays [UNCONFIRMED]. The newest entry on his Fandom patch-history page is Patch 1.8.56: Fracture lost its debuff purge (cooldown cut to 24–18s), the passive's activation hits stopped slowing, and rift activations began refunding extra Energy on minions. A top-up-store blog's claimed "Patch 1.9.20 nerf" is likewise [UNCONFIRMED].

The trackers, dated (community snapshots, not Moonton figures): - MLBBHub (daily refresh, checked 21 Oct 2026): 49.1% WR, 1.4% pick, 6.1% ban; rated Medium difficulty. - MLBBDex (updated 19 Oct 2026): A tier in Jungle — 49.4% WR, 1.5% pick, 7.1% ban. - MLBB.io (data updated 20 Oct 2026): A tier (risen B→A, "Contested") — 49.4% WR, 1.4% pick. - EliteDias (updated Oct 2026): S tier on its all-hero board, same 49.4% — the editorial desks (Pocket Gamer files him A among Assassins, 17 Oct 2026) rate him above the data sites.

The chorus: 49.1–49.4% win rate, ~1.4% pick, and a 6–7% ban rate — players fear him more than the spreadsheets do. Sentiment: no fresh r/MobileLegendsGame Nolan threads surfaced this season — tracker/creator material only, and MLBBHub's thesis is blunt: a setup-dependent one-shot jungler who only works in one kind of draft. My tier verdict: B+. The A paperwork is real, and so is the tax: his damage starts on the *second* cast, a full second after he shows himself, and the drafts that interrupt that second — Phoveus, suppression, point-and-click lockdown — don't outplay him, they switch him off. In the right draft he's a geometry exam failed at walking speed. Blind, he's a 2,549-HP scientist holding a ruler.

The full kit: what every button does

All mechanics from the MLBB Fandom hero page, checked 21 October 2026. Base HP 2549→4607, Physical Attack 124→289, MS 260. He runs on Energy, not mana: 100 max, 5 regen per second, both basic skills cost 25 — rift refunds are his fuel line. Moonton ratings (via MLBB.io): Offense 6, Durability 3, Control 2, Difficulty 6. - Passive — Dimensional Rift: Every skill Nolan casts leaves a Rift lasting 5 seconds that slows enemies touching it by 30%. When a rift contacts another rift, they activate: enemies are pulled to the intersection and take 220 (+140% Extra Physical Attack) Physical Damage after a short delay. Each activation hitting a hero or creep refunds 15 Energy and heals him 150 (+120% Extra Physical Attack); repeat activations on the same enemy deal only 40% after the first. Fine print (Fandom): rifts chain within 0.5s and need only be *near*, not overlapping. Cosmic Leap rides on the passive: after 5 seconds without dealing or taking hero damage (minions/creeps don't count), his next basic attack becomes a dash to the target dealing (+120% Total Physical Attack) and leaving a rift. - Skill 1 — Expansion: Nolan cuts a rectangular area in front of him for 230–480 (+40% Total Physical Attack) and leaves a rift at the first enemy hit. Cooldown 2.0→1.0s; 25 Energy. Fine print (Fandom): on empty ground the rift appears slightly *beyond* the indicator — and cast into a minion wave, the wave eats the placement (MLBBHub). - Skill 2 — Gauge: Nolan charges in the target direction, slashing enemies in his path for 70–220 (+13% Total Physical Attack) and leaving a rift. Cooldown 2.0→1.0s; 25 Energy. Low damage, huge job: the mobility and the second rift in most combos. - Ultimate — Fracture: Nolan slashes the target location 3 times, 120–180 (+50% Extra Physical Attack) per slash, leaving 3 rifts and slowing targets hit by 30% for 0.5s — then the rifts activate automatically as he dashes backwards out of the fight. Cooldown 21/18/15s; no Energy cost. One documented dispute: MLBBHub still describes Fracture as purging debuffs, but Fandom's patch history records the purge removed in Patch 1.8.56 and the current hero page doesn't list it. Fandom governs — plan as if the cleanse is gone.

Skill priority, my way: Fracture at 4/8/12, Expansion first (the damage scaler, 230→480 — ONE Esports maxes it too), Gauge second. Level 1 is the exception: take Gauge first for the clear (MLBBHub).

Combos

  • "The X" (the real kill): walk in from fog with Cosmic Leap primed → the enhanced basic dashes in and plants rift one → Expansion aimed *behind* the target, opposite their escape → the intersection pulls them back into the detonation. The first rift is bait geometry; the second cast is the damage. If they Flicker the pull, the detonation's delay window still tracks them (MLBBHub).
  • "The Camp Blender": Skill 1 into the camp (rift on the first unit hit) → Gauge straight through it → the two rifts overlap inside the small camp radius and detonate through the whole stack. Camps stand in a pile, and piles are intersections (MLBBHub).
  • "The Exit Signature": Fracture as the finisher, not the opener — three slashes, three rifts auto-detonating while the backward dash carries you out. A follow-up rift on an already-detonated target pays only 40% (MLBBHub): extra rifts are closers, not openers.

Rotation and map control

The first four minutes are scripted (MLBBHub): Gauge at level 1, red buff first — Expansion plus Gauge lay two rifts inside the camp, the detonation clears the stack, Retribution timed on the camp leader. Clear the small camps and scuttle to level 4. First gank around 2:30, on whichever side lane pushed first, entering from river brush with Cosmic Leap charged — never by dashing in cold. One rule keeps the primer alive: don't deal hero damage on your way in — no last-hitting the wave, no offensive Retribution-steal on your target (MLBBHub's warning).

The spike is two items: Blade of the Heptaseas + Hunter Strike, ~5–6 minutes (MLBBHub). Not a coincidence — Heptaseas' Ambush primes on the same no-damage window as Cosmic Leap, so the first basic carries both bonuses plus the first rift. After it, an undefended marksman dies in one rotation.

Objectives: rift detonations hit creeps at full value and refund Energy and health per hit, so a Turtle or Lord in a pre-laid rift pair melts while Nolan sustains off the fight — set the geometry *before* the pull. Teamfights invert assassin instincts (MLBBHub): Nolan engages *first*, from a flank, before the main fight starts — enter third and both primers are broken by stray damage. Take the pick, Fracture out, play the 5v4.

Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)

The locked slots (MLBBHub): the jungle boot — Ice Retribution by default (its movement-speed steal is a second slow layered on the rift slow) — and Blade of the Heptaseas, the item his passive was designed around. Hunter Strike third: cooldown for a second Gauge per fight window, plus a movement burst that stacks with the Ambush slow. The real decisions: Endless Battle is the default fourth (Divine Justice procs on nearly every post-skill basic — Zathong's burst set runs it too); Sky Piercer only when already ahead. Fifth: Malefic Roar vs two or more armor items (Hub FAQ and Zathong agree it's core), Blade of Despair when the enemy stays squishy — its below-half-HP spike lands as the second rift detonates. Sixth: Queen's Wings, the escape item — low-HP damage reduction plus a cooldown shave that hands you back Gauge when you need the door. Do not build Berserker's Fury (MLBBHub, bluntly): crit does nothing for rift damage. Emblem: Assassin. Hub's FAQ setup: Rupture / Seasoned Hunter / Killing Spree. The tracked-build school (MLBB.io's sample) runs Thrill / Seasoned Hunter / Impure Rage — Seasoned Hunter is the consensus; slot three is sustain-vs-burn taste. Battle spell: Retribution — unanimous (MLBBHub, MLBB.io's builds, ONE Esports, Zathong), Ice blessing default. No current tracker files a lane Nolan.

How to counter him

Two tracker families, one verdict: interrupt the one-second setup beat or survive it, and he's a squishy with his dashes spent. MLBBHub and MLBB.io independently name the same measured top three: Natalia, Saber and Hilda — silence-plus-burst, point-and-click lockdown, and a bush bully. MLBBHub's draft vetoes sit above them: Phoveus (a kit made of dashes feeds Astaros' Gaze and paints Sinner's Mark on him — Hub: don't pick Nolan into Phoveus, full stop) and suppression — Franco's hook and Kaja's Divine Judgment end the combo before the second rift, because suppression is the one thing no dash answers. MLCounter.com's matchup table (older dataset, updated Aug 2026 — direction, not gospel) prices the same school: Nolan wins just 41% vs Phoveus (790 games), 42% vs Khufra (769), 45% vs Arlott, 46% vs Minsitthar, 47% vs Kaja. - Items: physical-defense stack — Antique Cuirass, Dominance Ice, Thunder Belt (MLCounter), Twilight Armor and Blade Armor (Zathong); Wind of Nature buys a carry the two seconds the combo needs to expire. - Play patterns: never stand on the glowing crack — the pull drags you to the *intersection*, so step sideways, not backwards; hold point-and-click CC for his dash-in; group on him the moment both rifts are spent; ward the river brush his entries come from. Who he counters — also measured (MLCounter): Silvanna 57%, Hanabi 56%, Badang 55%, Yin 54%, Novaria 52% — plus MLBBHub's counter data has him +2.7pp into Natan, deleted in one rotation. Immobile, dashless backlines (Zathong files Eudora, Hanabi, Miya as his food) are the feast list.

Mistakes everyone makes

  • "The Gauge Opener": Dashing in with Skill 2 out of the brush because it's the mobility button (MLBBHub). You've spent the dash, skipped the Cosmic Leap damage and the Heptaseas Ambush, and now you stand in melee placing the second rift by hand. Walk up instead.
  • "The Phoveus Present": Casting Fracture near a Phoveus who hasn't ulted (MLBBHub). The backward dash is still a dash — his ultimate locks on the moment you move.
  • "The Level-3 Coin Flip": Invading Fanny, Hayabusa or Ling at equal level because your clear felt fast (MLBBHub). Their combos resolve instantly; yours needs a setup second. Invade on a two-level lead, never on vibes.
  • "The Spent Exit": Using Fracture as an engage into a CC chain, then discovering your only disengage was the ultimate you just burned (MLBBHub). Fracture is the door home. Doors don't open fights.
  • "The Broken Primer": Last-hitting a wave or Retribution-stealing your gank target on the way in (MLBBHub). Hero damage — dealt or taken — kills Cosmic Leap and the Heptaseas Ambush stacked on it. You deleted the combo's first third.

FAQ

  • Did Nolan change in Season 42? Not in ranked. Absent from 2.2.16's verified list and every ranked section of blooing's roundup — his only mention is the Brawl-mode buff column. 2.2.16a excludes him too; anything else is [UNCONFIRMED]. Newest Fandom patch-history entry: Patch 1.8.56.
  • Does Fracture still cleanse CC? Disputed — plan on no. MLBBHub's page describes a debuff purge; Fandom's patch history records it removed in Patch 1.8.56, and the current hero page lists none. Suppression never cared either way.
  • Why did my full combo do nothing? Because the skills aren't the damage — the rift *intersection* is. One rift alone is a 30% slow and a warning sign. If Expansion's rift landed on a minion, or Gauge stopped short, there was never a detonation.
  • How does his Energy actually work? 100 max, 5 per second, 25 per basic skill — and every rift activation hitting a hero or creep refunds 15 and heals him. In camps he's nearly self-funding.
  • Jungle only, or can he lane? Jungle, per every current tracker (MLBBHub, MLBB.io, MLBBDex). Release-era creators flexed him into EXP off the blue buff, but Season 42's data is a one-role story.

Final verdict

Nolan in Season 42 is a theorem with a kill window: A-tier letters on MLBBDex, MLBB.io and Pocket Gamer, an S from EliteDias, and a 49.1–49.4% win rate underneath — half his games are drafted by people who read the letters and skipped the conditions. When his team starts fights and the enemy backline can't interrupt a one-second setup, he proves the intersection was always lethal and they were always standing in it. When Phoveus is on the board or two point-and-click locks are waiting, the theorem has no proof — he's a scholar with a ruler, 2,549 HP and a long walk home.

Play him if: your draft has a real initiator (Atlas, Tigreal, Khufra) who burns defensive cooldowns first, the enemy backline is dashless and grouped (Hanabi, Novaria, Silvanna, Eudora), there's no Phoveus and no suppression on the board, and you'll do the patient work — fog, primer, geometry.

Skip him if: the enemy shows Phoveus, Franco, Kaja or two hard locks, your team has no frontline to start the fight, or you need your jungler winning level-3 duels on reflexes. Take Hayabusa or Saber and start your own fights. Nolan doesn't win scrambles — he wins the second after the second rift lands.
