Chou MLBB Guide: The Freestyle Kick Merchant (Season 42)

Chou got zero changes in 2.2.16 and sits at 45% win rate on every tracker — because the hero isn't weak, the hands are. The kick combos, both builds, and why Flicker is a religion.

Nobody films a Tigreal montage. Nobody stays up at 2 a.m. stitching a Balmond highlight reel to a phonk track. But Chou? Chou has editors. I once watched a full-health enemy Layla farm peacefully under her own turret, and in the space of one blink she was airborne, backwards, inside MY team, inside MY turret's range, dead before her feet touched the floor — and the Chou who did it was already moonwalking away through the wall like the building owed him money. That is the hero. That kick is why he will never, ever be unpopular, no matter what the spreadsheets say.

Welcome to the dojo. I'm going to teach you the kick, the combos, both of his builds, and exactly why the trackers currently think he's a trap — and why they're only half right.

Why he's feared (and loved)

Chou is a displacement machine wearing a fighter's clothes. Every button exists to do one thing: reach one person and move them somewhere they desperately do not want to be. Jeet Kune Do is three chained dashes ending in a knockup. Shunpo is a control-immune dash that refunds itself every time that knockup lands. The Way of Dragon is a two-stage forced relocation that, with Flicker, delivers any hero on the map into the middle of your team. He doesn't win teamfights. He starts them as 5v4s by deleting someone before the fight technically begins.

And then there's the culture. Chou is THE montage hero — weekly freestyle-kick highlight reels (creator Unlusted literally runs a channel on "Chou immune, outplay & savage moments"), top-global one-tricks, TikTok combo scientists. Players don't pick Chou to climb safely. They pick him to feel like the main character. The fear he generates is theatrical: the moment a decent Chou vanishes into fog, your marksman starts playing like the floor is lava.

Season 42 viability: the honest read

Paperwork first. Patch 2.2.16 (16 September 2026): I read the full Fandom adjustment list — Masha and Bruno revamps; Aulus, Argus, Aldous, Lukas, Odette, Sun, Marcel, Kalea, Kadita, Hylos, Cici, Melissa, Miya, Hanabi, Yi Sun-shin, Alpha, Kagura, Edith, Karina, Paquito, Kaja. Chou is not on it. Verified: no Chou change in 2.2.16. Patch 2.2.16a (14 October 2026) has no Fandom page; every adjustment roundup I could find lists nerfs to Aulus, Hirara, Eudora and Rafaela plus buffs to Kalea and Khaleed — again, no Chou. [UNCONFIRMED] only because no official wiki page exists to cross-check; nothing anywhere reports a Chou change.

The trackers, dated — and they are a crime scene: - MLBBHub (refreshed daily, checked 20 Oct 2026): 45.1% win rate, 1.1% pick rate, 3.1% ban rate. - MLCounters (updated 20 Oct 2026): 45.08% win rate, 1.11% pick, 3.69% ban, ranked #90 of 133. - MLBBDex (updated 19 Oct 2026, Patch 2.2.16): Tier C, 45.1% win, 3.3% ban, 1.1% pick — with the single best one-line diagnosis on the internet: excellent in a coordinated team, much less so solo, where the isolation isn't followed up. - MLBBGuides (dataset updated 29 Sep 2026): Tier D, 45.14% win rate, 0.99% pick, 2.89% ban. - MLBB.io (October 2026 insights): files Chou under "Trap Picks" — 44.4% win rate in EXP lane at Mythical Glory+, with the advice to skip him unless you really know your combos. - And the outlier: Pocket Gamer's October 2026 editorial tier list parks Chou in S tier among Fighters. Somebody at Pocket Gamer has clearly been kicked into a turret one too many times — editorial fear, not data.

Sentiment check: no tidy Reddit consensus surfaced this season; the debate lives in the trackers and the creator scene. The montage crowd keeps him famous (the freestyle-kick content economy is thriving), while the data crowd calls him a trap pick whose kick nobody follows. Both are describing the same hero from different lobbies.

My verdict: C tier in solo queue, B in a coordinated five-stack — and S+ in your heart, which is the problem. At ~45% win rate he's statistically one of the weakest fighters in the game. He is also one kick away from winning any fight in it. That's not a contradiction; it's the entire hero.

The full kit: what every button does

All numbers from the Fandom hero page, checked 20 October 2026.

  • Passive — Only Fast: After travelling 5 units, your next basic attack deals 180% damage (it cannot crit), briefly slows the target by 80%, and shreds their physical defence by 10 (+1 per hero level) for 3 seconds, stacking up to 2 times. *Practical note: this is an after-kick passive. Your target lands airborne, slowed to a crawl and lighter in armour while your carry stands on them. Weave the empowered auto between skill casts — the shred buffs your whole team's physical damage, not just yours.*
  • Skill 1 — Jeet Kune Do: Strike in the target direction for 180–280 (+70% Total Physical Attack). Castable three times before going on cooldown (9.5s down to 8.0s). The 3rd cast knocks enemies airborne — and hitting an enemy hero with it resets Shunpo's cooldown. *Practical note: the third cast is the whole hero. Skip it and you lose the knockup AND your Shunpo refund in the same mistake.*
  • Skill 2 — Shunpo: Dash in the target direction, gaining Control Immunity and a 200–350 (+200% Extra Physical Attack) shield. Flat 5-second cooldown. *Practical note: this is not an escape button you panic-press. It's an immune dash — you Shunpo THROUGH the incoming stun, root or knockup (only suppression ignores it), then keep walking at their carry.*
  • Ultimate — The Way of Dragon: Roundhouse kick dealing 400/450/500 (+200% Extra Physical Attack) and knocking the target back. Recast to chase the target and deal a total of 480/530/580 (+220% Extra Physical Attack) across the follow-up. 34-second cooldown. *Practical note: the first cast is the delivery; the recast is the signature. Flicker lives between them — see combos.*

Skill priority: Jeet Kune Do first (its cooldown actually drops with levels), ultimate whenever offered, Shunpo last — its cooldown is a flat 5 seconds at every rank.

Combos

  • "The Delivery" (the montage kick): Jeet Kune Do three casts to close and knock up → Shunpo through any panic CC → ult kick → Flicker backwards, mid-knockback, dragging the victim deep into your team → ult recast to chase and finish. MLBBHub's timing rule: the whole sequence must land in under 1.5 seconds. Slower, and their Purify or Flicker saves them before the chase cast.
  • "The Insec": Shunpo (or Flicker) to get BEHIND the target, then ult kick them back toward your team or your turret. Old-school, still undefeated against carries who hug their tower.
  • "The Wall Slam": Kick the target into a wall so the knockback stops short — they stay in range for the recast chase and a full passive-auto combo instead of flying to safety.
  • "The Immune Walk": Save Shunpo purely as a CC dodge. Tigreal ult winding up? Franco hook flying? Shunpo through it, keep moving, kick someone. Half of high-level Chou is just refusing to be crowd-controlled at the correct half-second.
  • "The Refund" (lane trade): S1 casts 1–2 through the wave, 3rd cast through the enemy hero for the knockup, empowered passive auto with the defence shred, walk away. Shunpo just refreshed if they try to answer.

Rotation and map control

Two jobs, one hero. EXP Chou plays a quiet first four minutes: chip with the three-cast trade, don't donate Flicker to a lane scuffle (Flicker is the second half of the kick, not an escape — MLBBHub is blunt about this), hit level 4, shove the wave and disappear. Your spike isn't an item; it's level 4 with ult and Flicker up. From then on, lane is optional — rotate to mid or the jungle entrance and deliver somebody.

Roam Chou skips the lane entirely: pair with the jungler or mid, live in fog, and treat every bush as a loading screen for a kick. Tank build, Conceal blessing, same religion: you are a pre-fight hero. Your work happens in the three seconds BEFORE the fight — identify the target, deliver, then play the 5v4. If your team has no follow-up damage, do not kick: delivering a full-HP marksman into four retreating half-health teammates isn't a play, it's a donation. And wherever you play him: stand in fog, not on the frontline. Visible Chou has a threat radius of zero. Invisible Chou has a threat radius of everywhere.

Best build, emblem, and battle spell (Season 42)

Battle spell: Flicker. No debate anywhere. MLBBHub, MLBBGuides and Zathong all lock it — without Flicker there is no kick-drag, and kick-drag is the hero. Check enemy spells at the loading screen: Purify (90s cooldown, 1.2s of control immunity) cleanses your kick on contact, so either kick someone else or bait it with a fake S1 approach first.

Tough Boots is the one locked item on both builds (MLBBHub and MLBBGuides agree): the CC reduction protects your approach, which is the only part of the combo that can be interrupted.

Damage build (EXP, solo queue) — the cross-source consensus (MLBBHub + MLBBGuides identical core): - Blade of the Heptaseas — the Ambush proc plus your passive auto plus ult cast one deletes a 70%-HP squishy by the 6–8 minute mark. - War Axe — cooldown reduction, stacking attack, true-damage conversion at full stacks. - Endless Battle — Divine Justice true damage fires off nearly every cast in your chain; the quiet power pick. - Malefic Roar — when they stack armour. - Immortality — because the delivery sometimes delivers you too. - Skip Blade of Despair despite its popularity in older guides — MLBBHub flags it as the weakest common buy: by the time its low-HP bonus matters, the target should already be dead.

Tank build (roam / coordinated) — again identical across MLBBHub and MLBBGuides: - Dominance Ice — hybrid defence aura plus anti-heal for the fights you start. - Athena's Shield — against magic burst. - Antique Cuirass — stacks an attack debuff on anyone hitting you. - Queen's Wings — damage reduction when low, so you live long enough to kick twice per fight. - Immortality — same reason, bigger ego.

Bruiser middle ground: Heptaseas → War Axe → Brute Force Breastplate; its stacking CC reduction on top of Tough Boots makes you near-unstoppable mid-combo (both MLBBHub and MLBBGuides recommend exactly this when one target matters but the dive threat is real).

Emblem — the actual debate: MLBBHub prescribes Fighter emblem (Firmness, Festival of Blood, Brave Smite) for the damage build. MLBBGuides runs Custom Fighter for damage and Custom Tank for roam (Concussive Blast adds HP-scaling AoE on the passive auto). Zathong still swears by the Assassin emblem for burst EXP play. My read: Fighter for EXP, Tank for roam, Assassin only if you enjoy living one mistake from the grey screen.

How to counter him

The data trackers agree on the headline trio: - Phoveus — the #1 answer on both MLBBHub and MLCounters. His passive fires a homing shield-and-slow projectile at anyone who dashes or blinks nearby. Your full combo is four dashes. Do the maths — he wants you to play Chou near him. - Cyclops — top counter on MLCounters, top-three on MLBBHub: point-and-click lockdown and burst that doesn't care how slippery you are. - Esmeralda (MLBBHub) — absorbs your burst combo into her shields and wins the extended trade you were never built for. Lukas (MLCounters) rounds out the lane answers.

Then the pattern-breakers: Minsitthar — his ult field disables every movement skill inside it; your dashes, Shunpo and the ult chase simply stop working (it's a movement ban, not a debuff Shunpo can cleanse). Diggie — Time Journey grants his team control immunity and cleanses your kick on arrival; the only real window is right after it expires. Purify on the carry does the same job in miniature. And the universal one: punish the miss. Chou who whiffs the third-cast knockup has no guaranteed ult, no Shunpo refund and no business being near you — collapse on him in that cooldown window.

Mistakes everyone makes

  • "Flicker Is Not an Uber": Burning Flicker to escape a level-3 lane trade. For the next 120 seconds you are a fighter with mediocre damage and no delivery service. Die with it up if you must — MLBBHub notes you had Shunpo and wall angles the whole time.
  • "The Front-Door Kick": Engaging from vision, in a straight line, into a team watching you come. The kick is an ambush tool. If they saw you load it, it was already dead.
  • "Kicking the Tank": Delivering the enemy Fredrinn into your backline and calling it a pick. Name your target in draft — a dashless carry, a channel-dependent mage. No name, no Chou.
  • "Ulting Into Time Journey": Kicking inside Diggie's ult radius and watching the cleanse eat your entire game plan. Track the cooldown, kick after.
  • "Skipping the Third Cast": Impatient S1 usage that never reaches the knockup. You lose the guaranteed ult, the Shunpo reset, and — judging by your win rate contributions — possibly the game.

FAQ

  • Is Chou good in Season 42? Statistically, no — ~45% win rate, #90 of 133 on MLCounters. Practically, he's a specialist's weapon: MLBBDex calls him excellent in coordinated teams and a solo-queue trap. Both statements are true.
  • EXP or roam? Both are real. EXP for solo queue damage build; roam (tank build) shines in coordinated play where your kicks get followed.
  • Why does everyone take Tough Boots? Because the only thing that reliably stops a Chou combo is getting CC'd mid-approach. The CC reduction is the build.
  • Can Shunpo dodge anything? Almost — it's full control immunity during the dash, but suppression (Franco, Kaja) still catches you, and Minsitthar's field disables the dash itself.
  • Tank or damage build? If your team has a real damage core and follow-up, tank roam. If you're the damage, Heptaseas damage build. When in doubt in solo queue: damage — nobody follows a tank Chou's kick at 2 a.m.
  • Is he hard to learn? The kit is simple; the timing isn't. The 1.5-second kick window, the Purify checks, the third-cast discipline — give it thirty games before ranked. The montage takes longer.

Final verdict

Chou is the most famous 45%-win-rate hero in Mobile Legends, and honestly? Correct. The kick is the single most satisfying play the game offers, and the data says satisfaction doesn't convert to wins unless your team is awake. Moonton left him completely untouched in 2.2.16, the trackers have him somewhere between C and D with one terrified editorial S, and MLBB.io literally files him under "trap picks."

Play him if: you have follow-up damage on your team (or a duo), your fingers are fast, and you understand that one perfect kick wins more games than forty minutes of honest laning.

Skip him if: you're solo queueing at 2 a.m. with strangers who won't follow a kick, you need a stat-check fighter, or you tilt when the montage play misses. Chou doesn't carry games. He kidnaps them — and kidnapping, regrettably, is a team sport.
